Hitchcock’s Vertigo Remake Possibly Starring RDJ

You must remember Vertigo, a psychological thriller featuring acrophobia and vertigo-ridden PI Scottie, who was hired to follow Gavin’s wife to explain her strange behavior. It was only Alfred Hitchcock’s most famous movie, which has gone down in the list of greatest classic movies of all time. Well, we might be getting a remake of that.

According to a report by Deadline, Paramount is currently working on a remake of Vertigo and is eyeing Robert Downey Jr. for the lead role of John “Scottie” Ferguson. See and Peaky Blinders creator Steve Knight has been brought on to write a script for the remake.

Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey are producing under Team Downey, along with Davis Entertainment’s John Davis and John Fox. The report went public after Paramount bought the rights to the 1958 film.

The classic film may have done moderately well at the box office during its theatrical run, with mixed reviews, but it is now noted as a classic Hitchcock film. The film was the first to use the dolly zoom, an in-camera effect that disrupts the viewers’ perspective to incorporate Ferguson’s acrophobia.

This was renamed the “Vertigo effect” afterward when many prominent filmmakers used it in their projects – like Steven Spielberg in Jaws and Robert Zemeckis in Back to the Future Part II.

With Knight’s hand in the writing and RDJ’s acting skills on screen, a Vertigo remake doesn’t sound so bad. What do you make of this news? Let us know in the comments below.

About Vertigo

Vertigo is a 1958 American psychological thriller film directed and produced by Alfred Hitchcock. The story was based on the 1954 novel D’entre les morts (From Among the Dead) by Boileau-Narcejac. Alec Coppel and Samuel A. Taylor wrote the screenplay.

The film follows former police detective John “Scottie” Ferguson, who has retired because an incident in the line of duty has caused him to develop acrophobia and vertigo, a false sense of rotational movement. Scottie is hired by an acquaintance, Gavin Elster, as a private investigator to follow Gavin’s wife, Madeleine, who is behaving strangely.

The film stars James Stewart, Kim Novak, Tom Helmore, Raymond Bailey, and more.
