PBS Cancels the Infamous Caillou after 20 Years

Parents all over America are breathing a heavy sigh of relief (and celebrating on Facebook) after getting to know that PBS has finally canceled Caillou. The kids’ series had debuted in Canada in 1997 and made its way to the US in 2000. Ever since then, the bald four-year-old has been a favorite for many kids but more of a nightmare for their parents.

The series revolves around a four-year-old boy called Caillou, who lives an entirely unremarkable life with his parents, younger sister and pet cat, Gilbert. Caillou is called The Prince of Imagination in the show, and he often uses his imaginative power to solve his problems.

Several adults have complained that the show is unbearable, even more than the regular ones, because of the main character. His response to any disagreement is to behave in the most unruly and violent way. Some claim that the show has triggered many children to throw themselves on the floor and bang their fists on it as a reaction to being told to go to bed- something they had never done before.

Although the announcement has been welcomed by many, not much is known about why PBS pulled the plug on the show. Is it because the creators suddenly became aware of the multiple hate groups dedicated to the “bald, whiny brat”? Or did the Change.org petition to get the show off-air finally get enough signatures?

The chances are that the show is getting canceled because it has run its course. It has been on the air for 20 years. Although no new episodes have been created since 2010, the show has been continued to air for ten more years because of syndication. However, no official reason has been provided by PBS in its announcement.

If, for some reason, Caillou is still a must in your household, you can stream the show on Amazon Prime Video.
