Peacemaker’s Future Discussed: What will happen to Peacemaker now?

Peacemaker had its glorious run of 8 episodes and finally came to an end with quite an intriguing finale. DC fans should actually thank writer-director James Gunn for actually singlehandedly lifting up DCEU after long.

The finale titled “It’s Cow or Never” finally wrapped up the flawed DC hero and his company’s main aim of stopping the Butterflies. But, there are many questions that are lingering in my head and I am surely not the only one.

HBO Max has renewed Peacemaker for a second season. While nothing is certain about what to expect from the future of Peacemaker, the finale promises more delving into Peacemaker’s morally ambiguous personality and the consequences of season 1.

So, to make things more interesting, I have tried to answer some of the important questions here and understand what the finale means for Peacemaker’s future.

What happens in the season 1 finale?

In the finale, Peacemaker and his team finally manages to reach the location of the Butterflies, where they were hiding their main syrupy food supply- an alien slug named the cow. Peacemaker’s main aim is to destroy this cow, which would cause the Butterflies to die of starvation and thus, make their invasion a failure.

The team kicks off a fiery battle with the Butterflies. But even after the activation of Peacemaker’s sonic helmet, the team does not do well. Vigilante and Harcourt suffers severe gunshot wounds and Economos went down with another injury.

So, it was just Peacemaker and Adebayo left to deal with the cow. However, there’s a twist which changes everything we’ve been thinking till now.

The Butterfly leader, Goff revealed to Peacemaker that the Butterflies do not actually want to invade the Earth like evil aliens but wants to protect the Earth from their likes so it does not perish like their own planet did.

Goff pleads to Peacemaker to leave the cow and we see him helping out the Butterflies. The finale focuses a lot on Peacemaker’s traumatic past memories which helped explain the conflicted man that he is today.

But, to everyone’s surprise, he finally rejects Goff’s offer and shoots its host body in the chest. This way, he spares Goff’s life. Then, he activates Adebayo’s human torpedo helmet to deliver a killing blow to the cow.

We can interpret Peacemaker’s decision in many ways, but most probably he for once did not want to go by what is other’s idea of what is right or good but by his own gut. So, maybe he had his own reasons.

What happens to the Task Force X?

In my opinion, the finale was quite complete and did not leave too many hints about what to expect from season 2. But since a season 2 is already on cards and has been formally announced, it will totally be worth it to explore some possibilities of what might come up in the future.

Task Force X

First of all, the finale hints at the end of Task Force X. Though every member of the Task Force except Murn is alive, the future of it does not seem favorable, considering the events of the finale.

In the episode, Adebayo takes things up in her own hands when she takes up a mic at the press conference and reveals that Peacemaker was actually innocent and puts the blame on her own mother, Amanda Waller as the one who was behind all the mess.

Waller obviously does not seem happy with it. Interestingly, Adebayo did this after Peacemaker called her his best friend (apart from Eagly). I think Waller might just want to take revenge and it will also not be surprising if she blames Peacemaker for turning her own daughter against her.

What will happen to Peacemaker?

There’s the big lingering question we all have: What is next for Christopher Smith? In the finale, Peacemaker is last seen chilling at his own place, with Eagley when he is haunted by his father’s ghost.

Auggie Smith

Though Peacemaker killed his father aka Auggie Smith the White Dragon, it seems like his trauma will not leave his side so easily. We know that Auggie Smith tormented Chris for ages.  His constant abuse made Peacemaker’s life way worse than needed and it even resulted in him accidentally killing his own brother when they were kids.

I think the finale makes it clear that Smith’s trauma related to his past experiences with his father are not leaving anytime soon. The ghost of his father is a hallucination, which we realize when Smith is unable to hit this ‘ghost’ with his poison darts.

But we can expect Peacemaker to take more time to deal with his issues. At its core, Peacemaker is a show about human nature and emotions rather than simply another appreciation of an alpha male with savior complex.

So it is only fair what we see how Smith manages to deal with his issues and are able to get a more layered, complex version of him as we did in this season.

Perhaps in season 2, we can see Peacemaker take up a new high-stakes mission and deal with it using his ambiguous sense of morality and justice. We also do not know whether Vigilante will return and if Harcourt will continue to help Peacemaker.

Harcourt

Harcourt does end up having a small emotional moment and sort of a hint of a connection with Christ in the hospital when he comes to visit her. This could be a beginning of something or mean that Harcourt will also have a bigger role to play in the future.

So, it is all just speculation as of now. But I think we can be sure of one thing, we will definitely see more of John Cena as Peacemaker and there’s still hope for DCEU.

Also, yes, you’re right. I am going to completely ignore that mockery of a Justice League cameo that was sneaked into the finale, like we wouldn’t notice. It made little sense to me and while it might hint at other DCEU characters making appearances in subsequent seasons, it is the least important thing to look forward to, in my opinion.
