Steven Knight Talks Peaky Blinders Finale, Movie, and Post-war Spinoff

“May you be in heaven a full half-hour before the devil knows you’re dead” seems to be the perfect quote from season 1 to describe the Peaky Blinders finale.

With everyone’s favorite gangster period drama finally coming to an (almost) end and what with Tommy finding heaven on earth, riding off on a white horse—one could not have asked for a better ending to the story.

Creator Steven Knight spoke to Deadline about wanting to bring Tommy “back to life” as a part of his redemption because when the series first began, he was “dead inside,” but when he chose not to shoot the doctor in the finale, that’s when he became a changed man.

Considering how the proper goodbye to the Shelby family is still to come with the upcoming film, Knight spoke about the series ending and revealed his plans for Tommy’s future.

Knight had initially planned a seven-season run, which is now expected to end with a movie instead. As the creator explained, the film will be set in World War II, and he’s letting the story take its course without a strict plan,

“The thing is that when I’m writing anything, but particularly Peaky, I tend to not have a plan except something very, very broad. So for the film, it’s actually set in World War II, which I think I probably wouldn’t have done for Series 7; I’d have probably taken it up to the war, but because it’s a movie, then I think we need a sort of gear change.”

Knight mentioned that Oswald Mosley and all other key (alive) players from the series would play a part in the film. He added that the newer generation would “come through” in the movie.

“I’m really interested in Duke, I’m really interested in Isiah and just watching a new generation come through, but with the older generation still there.”

Season 6 finale saw Tommy whisper something in Duke’s ear while Charlie sort of gave him the cold shoulder for never being there for him. This can influence the film’s plot—call it Tommy’s foreshadowing if you must, but another scene that hints at this is Tommy telling Duke how his two sons would need to bear the “light and dark” sides of his business each.

Knight also added that he’s open to the possibilities of continuing the story during the wartime or even in post-war Britain.

Lastly, the creator spoke about other extended properties of the Peaky Blinders franchise, which includes a Ballet stage show that will tell the story of Tommy and Grace’s love story.

For fans in the US, the sixth and final season of Peaky Blinders will be available to stream on Netflix on June 10.
