Perry Mason S2 E2 Ending: Something Fishy About McCutcheon Murder

Perry Mason may have saved Emily Dodson, but he still can’t help feeling like a failure. Maybe that’s why he decides never to get into such matters again. But when the Gallardo family comes to him for help, the lawyer takes on the case of Brooks McCutcheon’s murder, after a push from Strickland, and finds that the case is more complicated than it seems.

In one episode, Mason went from never wanting to work a case again to actively working towards uncovering a bigger plot by pulling at innocent threads and unraveling darker secrets.

After he and Della find Brooks was involved in corrupt deals and drowning in debt, getting on the wrong side of some dangerous people, the genius investigator knew someone had framed the Gallardo brothers.

In the end, Perry connects the amoral cop Holcomb burning a boat, which he later connects to Charles Goldstein. Why is that name familiar? Because he was the mystery man who had gotten a seemingly unrelated subpoena earlier in the episode.

The importance of this subpoena comes to light when we see Mr. Crippen, an associate of the McCutcheon family. Soon after the murder of Goldstein, we see Crippen burn a similar subpoena addressed to Brooks, after which he was found dead too. Did Crippen order the kill and frame the Gallardo brothers?

And while we’re at it, the fact that witnesses are ending up dead and false evidence is being planted, plus Holcomb’s involvement, it’s safe to assume something far more nefarious is happening.

Holcomb’s threat at the end definitely suggests someone powerful is backing him this time, and though I doubt Crippen for now, the show can deliver a twist with a new player altogether. Long before Perry Mason became the legendary lawyer that he was, he was a PTSD-ridden war vet struggling to find his place in the world.
