How Is Buzz Lightyear’s Origin Story Connected to the Toy Story Series?

A new Pixar trailer has teased to take us to infinity and beyond. That’s right! A Buzz Lightyear origin movie is in store for Toy Story fans, come June 17, 2022.

Chris Evans will be voicing Buzz, a “real” astronaut on whom the Toy Story figurine is based. The spinoff will introduce Buzz as an in-universe character existing before toy-Buzz. As such, Lightyear is also set in a timeline before the Toy Story series.

Because the franchise is trying to establish that the two characters are different, Evans won’t be technically replacing Tim Allen, who voiced Buzz in Toy Story.

Now, although Lightyear is supposed to be set in Toy Story’s past (that is pre-1995), the trailer does look way more futuristic—what first appears to be a normal rocket launch snowballs into Buzz navigating a spacecraft at the speed of light. Then he is seen on a Mars-like planet that seems to have sentient plants and other life forms.

But if the timeline still doesn’t make sense, you’re not alone. Although Pixar has given us a few clues in the trailer, they still have to confirm who exactly Evans’ Buzz is and how he ties into the Toy Story Series.

For one, it was a popular belief that Buzz Lightyear was based on the US astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Secondly, a Buzz Lightyear origin story already exists in the form of the animated film Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.

I will leave it to the creative minds at Pixar to set it straight for us.

Angus Maclane will be making his solo directorial debut with Lightyear, written by Pete Docter and Noah Baumbach. Besides Evans, no other character or cast has been introduced. But we can rest assured that we will see Buzz’s signature green and white spacesuit.

The internet is already up and about anticipating the movie:

There’s quite a lot of time left for Lightyear’s 2022 release. Expect to see more teasers, posters, and fun bits till then!
