Producer Jerry Bruckheimer Says There Are No Immediate Plans for Top Gun 3

After years of delays mainly caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the long-awaited sequel to Tony Scott’s 1986 classic Top Gun finally made its box office debut this past weekend, breaking many records.

Top Gun 2 set a new Memorial Day weekend record, surpassing Pirates of the Caribbean. It was the biggest opening weekend of Tom Cruise’s career at $156 million.

With 36 years between the film and its iconic predecessor, Pete “Maverick” returns to the Top Gun program, tasked to train a new generation of younger pilots, including the son of his late RIO and best friend, Goose.

Following Top Gun: Maverick’s great box office performance, audiences are now wondering if there are plans for a Top Gun 3.

Movie producer Jerry Bruckheimer says that there are no immediate plans to make Top Gun 3.

Bruckheimer discussed the possibility of a third Top Gun movie in his latest interview with Deadline. According to the producer, currently, there are no immediate plans for a sequel to Top Gun: Maverick. However, the producer said he was open to the idea and didn’t rule anything out.

The 78-year-old movie producer has worked on Tom Cruise’s long-awaited sequel to the iconic action flick and says he wants to relish the reaction to the movie before moving on.

When asked about the possibility of a third movie, Jerry told Deadline, “Let’s ride this wave.”

In addition to its incredible aerial sequences—which were all filmed in real—and heartwarming story, Top Gun: Maverick garnered immediate praise even before its theatrical release. A third Top Gun movie already seemed plausible before, but it has become increasingly likely given its commercial success.

Other Maverick actors have also commented on the possibilities, with Miles Teller proposing a sequel centered around his character, Top Gun: Rooster.

Glen Powell also shared ideas on how Top Gun 3 might happen, sharing his own ideas.

However, it is hard to imagine a Top Gun movie without Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski, who worked tirelessly on bringing practical effects to life on the movie instead of using CGI.

Given the lack of information as of now, it is unclear whether or not there will be a third Top Gun movie at all. There is no way to know how it would be, considering that this sequel came 36 years after the first Top Gun movie.

Maybe producer Bruckheimer is right, it is best to sit back and enjoy Top Gun: Maverick right now instead of theorizing about the next sequel.

Fans can currently watch Top Gun: Maverick in theatres.
