Avatar 4 Will Take a Huge Leap in Time, Confirms Producer

According to a recent statement by producer Jon Landau, the upcoming installment of the Avatar franchise, Avatar 4, will involve a significant jump in time.

This comes after director James Cameron’s return to the series with Avatar: The Way of Water, which takes place fifteen years after the original film, where the Na’vi successfully overthrew the Resources Development Administration.

In the sequel, main characters Jake Sully and Neytiri fight to safeguard their family from the revived Colonel Miles Quaritch, who is determined to kill Jake.

Recently, Screen Rant went to a press event for the home release of Avatar: The Way of Water, where Landau talked about the future of the franchise.

During the event, Landau confirmed that the first act of Avatar 4 has already been filmed, as the story demands a significant time leap for the remainder of the movie. Check out Landau’s statement below:

The first act [is already shot]. Because truth be told, there’s a time cut after the end of the first act [of Avatar 4], and we needed to get all the kids before they got older and shoot all that out.

In Avatar: The Way of Water, Jake and his family fought against Quaritch and his men, resulting in significant losses on both sides.

Jake reaffirmed his allegiance to the sea faring Metkayina people and vowed to continue his battle against the RDA.

The conclusion of the sequel hints at an action-packed Avatar 3, in which Quaritch struggles with his son Spider’s actions but is also more resolute than ever to defeat Jake.

Given that Avatar 3 and the first act of Avatar 4 have been filmed, it’s probable that the sequels will resume immediately after Avatar 2.

Nonetheless, the significant time leap in Avatar 4 hints that either Avatar 3 or the first act of Avatar 4 will end on a crucial plot point that will have significant effects on the entire franchise.

While the plot details remain undisclosed, the passage of time would enable the Sully children to mature, potentially during a period of calmness.

According to the latest updates, Avatar 3 is expected to significantly broaden the scope of Pandora’s ecosystem, featuring additional biomes housing at least two Na’vi societies.

Additionally, the time gap may result in extensive journeys across the extraterrestrial planet, as Jake attempts to unite remote tribes and vanquish the RDA, once and for all.

However, Avatar enthusiasts will have to exercise patience, as Avatar 4 is not slated to release until 2026, leaving us curious about the reason behind the time jump.
