With the Eternals’ theatrical release only days away on October 18, a set report, courtesy of ComicBook, reveals some important details of the movie.

While the Eternals’ origin story will undoubtedly be part of the film, a major chunk will be focused on their present.

As such, Moore gives us a little more understanding of their purpose: In the MCU version of the mythology, the Eternals are immortal aliens from the planet Olympia.

The Deviants, on the other hand, are a parasitic race that plunder planets, kill off their apex predators, and take on their characteristics while putting an end to intelligent life.

When the Deviants become a threat to Earth, the Celestials send forth the Eternals with the mission of saving the planet and its humans.

It takes a while for the Eternals to complete their task, and over this period, they begin to drift away as a team. When the Deviants are finally vanquished, the Eternals separate to live their own lives on the planet.

This is an important juncture in the movie because we see how different each Eternal is from the other due to their respective experiences in the five thousand years that have gone by.

But not only are the icky Deviants back, they are more powerful than ever.

“Sersi and Sprite, who now live in London, who are shocked when a Deviant arrives after not having seen a Deviant for 5,000 years and they seem to have evolved somehow. So the present is very much a mystery of, ‘Why are the Deviants back? Why are they different?’ And ‘Can we get the band back together,’ for lack of a better term, ‘in time to stop this new threat?'”

Of course, these questions will only be answered in the movie, and it will be interesting to see how it will reshape the MCU.

Already, fans have been itching to know the Eternals’ sentiments about the chaos that wrecks the planet, including that minor end-of-the-world bit with Thanos.
