Rant: ‘Falcon & Winter Soldier’ Has a New Cap America and I Hate It

The MCU has introduced its new Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. U.S. Agent John Walker has ascended to the iconic role previously helmed by the beloved Steve Rogers. But how do I feel about this sudden turn of events? Not here for it.

Even though the show is yet to announce his identity explicitly, longtime fans and enthusiasts know that it is none other than Walker. Appearing first in 1986’s Captain America #323, he was initially introduced as a villain and later brought in as the next Captain America after Rogers’ retirement.

However, unlike his predecessor, Walker’s character profile is not very appealing. Known to have a history of being temperamental, Walker has injured many of his opponents to the point of even killing them in combat.

Lacking Steve’s cool-headedness and compassion, Walker struggles with fitting into his designated position. Now, with the MCU finally bringing the character to life, it raises many questions about his upcoming role in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

The most intriguing one which comes to mind is whether he REALLY is the new Captain America. As was previously seen, in the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, Rogers passes on the shield to Sam Wilson, which would have made him the next Captain America.

However, due to his refusal of acknowledging anyone else but Steve being the legendary superhero, Sam turns it over to the U.S. government. The show will take a look into whether Sam will choose to take back the title or not, among other things.

But, coming back to John Walker as Captain America somehow just doesn’t sit well. As Rogers had become the American sweetheart, saying goodbye to him was hard. But, what’s even harder is watching someone else in his role.

With the release of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s pilot episode, many took to Twitter to launch the hashtag #NotMyCap, and I cannot stress enough how it has fueled my fire over hating Captain America John Walker.

As the MCU enters into its Phase 4 with new shows and other upcoming projects, it’s exciting to look forward to a more diverse world of new characters. But, with Walker’s introduction, and the broken pieces of my heart still recovering from Rogers’ departure, I’ll just have to excuse myself and take a moment to boo the new Captain America.
