Disney just published the teaser trailer for its new movie Raya and the Last Dragon, and it looks phenomenal. The most awaited feature-length Walt Disney Animation Studios film is scheduled for a March 2021 debut. Still, hopefully, this first trailer will keep you hooked for over a few more weeks.
The trailer features the Disney animated film’s current song. The movie shows off the voices of Kelly Marie Tran and Awkwafina. Tran is Raya, a girl from the kingdom of Kumandra who is in search of a way to save her homeland from an ancient evil. To accomplish her mission, she needs to track down the last dragon (who has converted into a human), Sisu, voiced by Awkwafina.
When she finds Sisu, the titular last dragon played by Awkwafina, her plans hit a speed bump—Sisu is less than ready to save the world. Along with her on her journey, Raya has a very adorable animal companion called Tuk Tuk.
The story of a young human girl uniting with a mythical character (who has lost its powers) to conquer a timeless villain and help the mythical character return to its former glory sounds somewhat like Moana. However, Raya appears and, more importantly, feels quite distinct from Moana or any other Disney animated feature.
Last year’s D23 Expo premiered the first footage from the movie. It was a provocative piece, full of extraordinary martial arts choreography and detailed with a lush, gorgeous, rain-soaked Southeast Asian vibe. Sisu comes off as one of the coolest characters in the history of Disney Animation.
Soon after the D23 Expo, the picture went through a pretty serious creative shake-up. The franchise removed directors Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins; however, Briggs remains a co-director alongside John Ripa. Tran replaced the lead actor Cassie Steele and an additional writer Qui Nguyen was announced to join Adele Lim. A different producer Peter del Vecho, who is now paired with Osnat Shurer, was also disclosed.
Raya and the Last Dragon is set for a simultaneous release on Disney+ and in cinemas.
