Read the Script for Russo Brothers’ ‘Cherry’ Ahead of the Movie’s Release

Fans awaiting the Apple TV+ drama Cherry can now read the full screenplay online, which was released two weeks before its official premiere.

Cherry is based on a novel of the same name written by Cleveland native Nico Walker. The book was published in 2018 and was a PEN/Hemingway Award finalist.  The novel is based on Walker’s own struggles while serving in Iraq and returning to life amidst an opioid emergency and turning to a criminal life. Walker negotiated the rights for the film while in prison.

Anthony Russo hinted at the grand vision for Cherry in an interview with Vanity Fair:

“We do think about it as an epic film, and it is very much a person’s life journey. But it does have a little bit of a split personality between being this character study and an epic life cycle.”

Joe Russo went on to disclose the energy and structure of Cherry,

“He travels a great distance over a 15-year period. The movie’s broken up into six chapters that reflect those different periods, and each one has a different tone. It’s shot with different lenses, different production designs. One’s got magical realism. Another chapter is absurdism. Another is horror…There’s a bit of gonzo in it. It’s raw in its tone. He’s a character in an existential crisis.”

Deadline lately uploaded the full script for the Apple TV+ adaption of Cherry. Though the film doesn’t release on Apple TV+ until March 12, cinema lovers can go over the entire screenplay online beforehand. Angela Russo-Otstot and Jessica Goldberg put down the screenplay. The 142-page script stretches over a period of 15 years and is broken up into six chapters.

The movie also features several industry all-stars. Spider-Man star Tom Holland portrays the leading role in the gritty crime drama alongside Ciara Bravo and Jack Reynor. Anthony and Joe Russo, who also directed The Avengers saga, supervised Cherry. The brothers have already worked with Holland before and have even confessed they wouldn’t have directed the film if he didn’t star in it.

Cherry narrates the story of a man’s arc from falling in love to his time as an Army medic in the Afghanistan war, with his return home and his unchecked PTSD steering him into robbing banks, doing time, and getting hooked on drugs.

Cherry will be released in theatres on February 26, 2021, and will debut on Apple TV+ on March 12, 2021.
