Doctor Strange 2 Producer Discusses the Future of the Illuminati in MCU

The Illuminati, which was first introduced by Brian Michael Bendis in the comics, is a secret group of superheroes formed after the Kree-Skrull war when Tony Stark realized that the team could have prevented the war by combining their knowledge of alien races.

In contrast to superhero teams such as the Avengers or X-Men, the group generally meets only to exchange information to prevent further disasters.

The Illuminati were introduced in the MCU with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness when Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) was traveling across universes, protecting America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) from the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen).

Following a brutal introduction in Doctor Strange 2, co-producer Richie Palmer opens up about the Illuminati’s future in the MCU.

The group includes Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier from the X-Men franchise, Lashana Lynch as Captain Marvel, and more. Captain Carter is played by Hayley Atwell, Karl Mordo by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Black Bolt by Anson Mount, and Reed Richards by John Krasinski.

Scarlet Witch wiped out the group in the MCU sequel by dreamwalking in an attempt to capture America. But the franchise may not be finished with the Illuminati yet.

This weekend, Marvel Studios Assembled released a documentary on The Multiverse of Madness. Co-producer Richard Palmer addressed the Illuminati’s future as a Marvel Cinematic Universe group, explaining that the multiverse version of the group may leave room for other incarnates in the future.

The producer said that they have been wanting to introduce the group to the MCU for years. He also teased a potential return for the group in another universe.

“They do the things that the other groups like the Avengers wouldn’t be too happy about… To do it in an alternate universe in the Multiverse, was a really exciting thing because we get to meet a version of this group in this other universe, and then we still might get to see an Illuminati of our main MCU one day, which is also very exciting.”

MCU fans have been reeling since the Illuminati were swiftly introduced and then destroyed by the Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange 2, especially the loss of John Krasinski’s Mr. Fantastic.

Nonetheless, Palmer’s hint that the Illuminati still have a future in the MCU after their deaths in the sequel should excite those eager to see more of the mysterious group.

Despite the fact that much of the team’s stories haven’t been properly prepared for the MCU, we have already seen or will soon see a number of characters associated with the Illuminati.

Originally, the Illuminati members were Tony Stark, Reed Richards, Black Bolt, Stephen Strange, Charles Xavier, and Black Panther.

The Illuminati team in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness featured half of this group; however, rumors have swirled that Namor will offer his MCU debut with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, with Tenoch Huerta playing the role. Audiences are still hopeful for a Tom Cruise Iron Man casting and Krasinski’s return as Mr. Fantastic, leaving the future of the Illuminati open.

Until then, audiences can revisit the Illuminati’s debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness, streaming now on Disney+.
