Ted Lasso is the show that’ll have you roll on the floor laughing in one minute and crying in bed the next.
The show’s season 2 does its job for the latter in an intensely emotional funeral sequence, with Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) singing Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up.
As Rebecca Welton stands up to give a eulogy for her father, she freezes. Her mind blank, not able to form words, the only thing that she can say, are the lyrics of Never Gonna Give You Up.
The powerful acting of Waddingham as Rebecca sank fans’ hearts, with many flocking to praise the extremely well-crafted emotional scene. One ‘fan’ who praised it, was none other than the British music icon whose song they used – Rick Astley.
Astley took to Twitter to talk about the use of his song. He didn’t just type it out, he actually recorded a near one-minute video, praising the acting and the delight of finding his song being used in the show.
He revealed that he’s a “massive fan of the show” and was “completely blown away.” While complimenting Waddingham’s acting, he tried to keep it spoiler-free, but did get teary-eyed towards the end.

Never Gonna Give You Up released in 1987 and is Astley’s debut song that remains iconic till date. He did retire from the industry in 1994, but came back in 2001 to release his album Keep It Turned On.
The reason behind Rebecca singing Astley’s iconic song was also hinted at during the episode. Rebecca had a tough relationship with her father.
She hated him because he cheated on her mother. Now that he’s dead, she doesn’t know how to process the eruption of multiple emotions inside her.
Mourners, starting with Ted, join her in singing Never Gonna Give You Up at the funeral, opening up a pool of tears for the viewers.
But count on Ted Lasso to showcase the most sensitive of relationships without even slightly insulting them.
