In another House of Gucci theater vs. real-life clash, director Ridley Scott didn’t hold back, firing at the Gucci family’s insulting comments on the legend, Al Pacino.
Scott sat down with Games Radar+’s Total Film podcast, sharing his thoughts on the recent backlash from the real-life Gucci members on the movie.
The Gucci family issued a statement calling the movie “far from accurate” and “extremely painful” to watch, calling it “an insult,” among many other things.
In response, Scott stated that he “tried to be as respectful as possible,” at least the amount one can be when adapting real-life stories for movies.
I tried to be as respectful as possible by being as factual as possible, and as factual as we can possibly imagine. Time and space sometimes has to jump because of the nature of the length of the film.

Scott also fired back at the family for being extremely insulting to Al Pacino’s physical appearance for portraying Aldo Gucci. He even remarked that the family should be counting their blessings to have a legend like Al Pacino represent Aldo, with possibly the biggest actors portraying their entire family.
But the people that were writing from the family to us at the onset were alarmingly insulting, saying that Al Pacino did not represent physically Aldo Gucci in any shape or form. And yet, frankly, how could they be better represented than by Al Pacino? Excuse me! You probably have the best actors in the world, you should be so f*cking lucky.

The criticism for Al Pacino came from Patricia Gucci, the second cousin of Maurizio Gucci, who described the Oscar-winning legend as “fat, short, with sideburns, really ugly.” She even added that the casting choice was “shameful,” describing Aldo as an elegant tall man with blue eyes.
For ages, creating a feature-length story that captivates the audience (whose primary need is entertainment) out of a real-life story has always been challenging. It’s now up to the audience to decide whether they like the movie, the performances, or not.
