Catch Up with Riverdale S5 with CW’s Official Return Synopsis

The second half of Riverdale Season 5 will be returning to CW on August 11. The network provides an official synopsis on the episode Chapter Eighty-Seven: Strange Bedfellows.

Riverdale’s carefully planned hiatus has sure left viewers with a lot of questions. The first half of Season 5 aired in January 2021 with 10 episodes exploring a series of jarring storylines — Jughead’s supposed alien abduction and Hiram’s spectacular jailbreak.

Now with part two of the season set to air on August 11, CW has released a teaser of what we can expect from the episode. Read the official synopsis down below.

RETURN TO RIVERDALE — In the aftermath of the prison break at Hiram’s (Mark Consuelos) jail, Archie (KJ Apa) leads the charge to round up the remaining convicts on the loose. Tabitha (Erinn Westbrook) reaches out for Betty’s (Lili Reinhart) help when she realizes Jughead (Cole Sprouse) is missing.

When Penelope (guest star Nathalie Boltt) re-enters the fold, Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) becomes suspicious of her true intentions. Camila Mendes, Madchen Amick, Casey Cott, Charles Melton and Drew Ray Tanner also star. Tessa Blake directed the episode written by Aaron Allen.

The focus of the episode will once again be the antagonism between Archie and Hiram, as the former deals with the prison break situation at hand. On the other hand, the Moth Men conspiracy (aka aliens) is in full swing with Jughead going missing.

The plot in Riverdale has always been a tad whimsical even without its extraterrestrial additions, but Season 5 has asked the audience to take a bigger leap by fast-forwarding its timeline to seven years in the future.

When asked if this would prove to be a blessing or a blunder, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa explains that this leap allows the actors to play roles closer to their age, while dealing with newer situations that couldn’t be introduced in their high school plotline. The time forward would also make for fresher, unseen dynamics among the characters. Here’s more from Aguirre-Sacasa.

Well, we can just drop everyone into new storylines that feel organic to the characters, but allow us to feel like we can move a little more nimbly.

Without the burden of, you know, Bughead dating or the burden of Archie still wrestling with the immediate death of his father. It felt like a way to freshen everything up and I feel like that was the big goal.

Not all are in agreement that the decision has affected the result. Fans who read the synopsis for Chapter Eighty-Seven: Strange Bedfellows have labelled it as “boring,” evident in the following tweet.

Despite criticism of recycling the same plotline every couple of episodes, Riverdale continues to move forward — the show has already been renewed for Season 6 scheduled to air later in 2021.

Will the second half of Riverdale Season 5 surprise us with something brand new? Tune in to CW on August 11 to find out.

About Riverdale

Based on a story from the popular Archies Comics, the 2017 Netflix drama Riverdale is centered on an innocent, small town of the same name.

It follows a group of high school students who are shocked by the death of a classmate, Jason Blossom. Together they unravel the secrets of Riverdale and who killed Jason.

Cole Sprouse’s grungy Jughead is the show’s narrator and school reporter who almost acts like its ‘Gossip Girl’ — documenting the characters’ lives and filling in the blanks for us.
