Robert Downey Jr. Opens Up About What He Misses About the MCU

The MCU is blazing its way through the Multiverse Saga with the recent Black Panther sequel officially ending Phase Four and the upcoming Ant-Man 3 kicking off Phase Five. But some days, as we do, you may find yourself missing the old MCU and the original Avengers, right?

Well, guess what? We’re not alone in that matter. The MCU original, Tony Stark himself, sometimes misses the old days of being at the center of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And no, we’re not basing it off on our spidey sense, Robert Downey Jr. admitted his top reasons for missing the MCU.

In an interview with Deadline about his new Netflix documentary-film about his late father, Robert Downey Jr. got candid about his MCU days. The actor listed his most memorable times in the Marvel Universe when asked what he missed the most about that time in his career.

Read his full quote below to know the top four reasons he gave for missing the MCU:

What do I miss most? Being in the trenches with Kevin Feige throughout; the beginning, with Jon Favreau, it’s like a beautiful dream now; the middle, with Shane Black on Iron Man 3, we’d just had Exton and shot it mainly in Wilmington, N.C. It was idyllic and subversive. And The End, when I realized I’d made so many close friends in the MCU cast, and the Russo Brothers helping me embrace Tony’s arc.

Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr. bid farewell to a character he played for ten years and has no plans to return to the role, instead focusing on his family and philanthropic work, much like Tony did in Endgame after he returned from space.

His role is one that Marvel won’t replace, on their terms or the fans or both, since no one could play Tony Stark better than RDJ. But RDJ did pass on his blessing to Dominique Thorne, who made her Ironheart debut in the recent Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Of course, Ironheart is her own hero, just as Ms. Marvel is to Captain Marvel, and Riri is not a replacement for Stark in the MCU. We never know if, down the line, Feige might be able to convince Downey for a comeback for old times’ sake, but for now, Tony Stark’s legacy will be continued without RDJ in the MCU.

About Marvel Cinematic Universe

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is an American media franchise and shared universe centered on a series of superhero films and TV series, independently produced by Marvel Studios and based on characters that appear in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.

The franchise includes comic books, short films, television series, and digital series. The shared universe, much like the original Marvel Universe in comic books, was established by crossing over common plot elements, settings, cast, and characters.
