First Look of Netflix’s The Unforgivable Starring Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock is back on the silver screen with the crime drama The Unforgivable. It is a Netflix venture that will have a limited release in theatres on November 24 and will be later available on the streamer, December 10 onwards.

Bullock will be playing Ruth Slater, an ex-convict trying to return to her hometown after serving a long time in jail. Her crime is not precisely revealed to the audience, but it’s colored to be brutal and “unforgivable.”

Netflix has released a first look image of the movie:

A haggard Slater appears to be introspecting as she stares at herself in the mirror. This shot could very well be at the time Slater gets released from jail, a moment where she has to prepare herself for the road ahead.

This internal prep seems necessary since a few of her intentions are known: she wants to atone for her past and reconnect with her younger sister. But with a community that has no mercy in their hearts, Slater may find the outside world crueler than the one inside prison.

Bullock talks to EW about the character’s thought process.

There are several people whose lives she affected by this crime she committed, and there’s a lot of hatred and anger and bitterness and sorrow associated with her release. She wants to find this one person, the only family she had when she went in, and you keep asking yourself, “Why can’t you let it go? This family member was traumatized by your actions—let it go! Stop harming these people all over again.”

Bullock also mentions that as Slater’s crime is unraveled, we get a deeper understanding of the situation, perhaps even a little bit of empathy towards her, and discover that there are others besides Slater who may be behind the tragic events.

The rest of the cast features Viola Davis, Aisling Franciosi, Rob Morgan, Vincent D’Onofrio, Linda Emond, W. Earl Brown, and others. Nora Fingscheidt is directing with a screenplay by Peter Craig, Hillary Seitz, and Courtenay Miles.

It’s worthy to note that the movie is based on the British miniseries Unforgiven by Sally Wainwright, but I reckon that the American version will put its own spin on it and have reveals that we can all enjoy—especially capturing the helplessness of trying to regain one’s life after being in prison. The real world is equally cruel and unforgiving to ex-convicts about second chances.

A full-length movie trailer for The Unforgivable is expected soon.
