Everything We Know about MCU Panels and Events at SDCC 2022

After a two-year break, the biggest fan event has returned! That’s right, San Diego Comic-Con is back, preview night was over on July 20, and the main event will now continue from July 21 to 24, with many panels, announcements, interviews, and updates from all the biggest production companies.

Marvel Studios is one of the big companies that has always created a major commotion at each SDCC event. In 2019, Marvel announced their major upcoming MCU Phase 4 projects like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Loki, What If, WandaVision, Thor: Love and Thunder, and more.

After Marvel’s return to SDCC 2022 with a three-year hiatus, fans can expect a highly anticipated series of announcements, interviews, and more—but maybe the level of surprise and shock won’t be the same as for Phase 4 projects. Why?

Rumor has it that Marvel Studios will save their big reveals and shocking news for the D23 Expo by Disney, which will be held in September. But no worries, there is still much to unravel in the three days’ worth of events at SDCC 2022.

According to Marvel’s website, fans can expect an extremely exciting lineup of panels and events featuring new information about She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Loki Season 2, What If Season 2, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Spider-Man: Freshman Year, and more!

Friday, July 22, will feature Marvel Animation Project in a 90-minute-long panel. Fans can expect a trailer for the Upcoming I Am Groot TV series, set to premiere in August, and a possible new trailer for What If Season 2. Official first looks for Marvel Zombies and X-Men ‘97 is also expected to be revealed, and an update for Spider-Man: Freshman Year can also be in the cards.

A special Marvel event will feature a shoutout to the webbed superhero in 60 Years of Spider-Man on Friday, which, given the success of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy and the upcoming Spider-Man Into the SpiderVerse project, is a great idea to attract loyal fans.

Next up on Saturday, July 23, is the most significant event among all Marvel’s panels. The Marvel Studios Mega Panel will feature Kevin Feige’s one-hour speech, which we expect to be filled with a big bundle of important details about upcoming projects and some fun surprises.

SDCC 2022 Day 1

It’s only Comic-Con’s first day, and Marvel has already captivated fans with some big announcements – and we’re going to give you all the updates here!

With some unmissable interviews, the biggest reveal was the announcement of Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Loga coming to Disney+ and Marvel’s animated series Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur’s cast list update along with the show’s first look!

Genius teen Lunella accidentally unleashes Devil Dinosaur into New York with a wrongly opened time vortex, but her mistake leads to them teaming up as the city’s newest superhero team in charge of keeping the Lower East Side from danger.

The animated series boasts a huge star cast, including Moon Knight actor Ethan Hawke’s daughter Maya Hawke joining the Marvel TV Series. Joining Maya Hawke are other voice actors, Alison Brie, Cobie Smulders, Pamela Adlon, Wesley Snipes, Craig Robinson, June Diane Raphael, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and more. May Calamawy, who played Layla El-Faouly in Moon Knight, has also joined the cast alongside Maya Hawke.

Following the animated series’ announcement, Marvel also announced that Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Logan are coming to Disney+ and will be available for streaming from July 22, 2022.

In other news, Marvel Comic writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, who have been working on Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty, also opened up in their interview with Angelique Roche.

The writers talked about how to move forward with Steve Rogers’ story in the comic and opened up about one of the upcoming main characters Kang the Conqueror.

SDCC 2022 Day 2

With the second day done and dusted, Marvel has released some surprising announcements with their animation panel on July 22 in Ballroom 20 at the San Diego Comic-Con 2022.

Writers and producers of Marvel Studios’ animation series, both existing and upcoming, consisted of the panelists for Marvel’s Day 2 at SDCC 2022. They announced major reveals regarding What If Season 2, I Am Groot, Marvel Zombies, Spider-Man: Freshman Year, and X-Men ‘97.

What If…? Season 2

The upcoming animated series I Am Groot finally got its first trailer and a brand new poster! Marvel also announced that the Guardians Of The Galaxy spinoff, featuring Baby Groot and his adventures, will release on Disney+ on August 10.

Marvel also displayed a short included in the series Titled “Groot Takes A Bath.” They also revealed that Season 2 of I Am Groot is coming soon with five additional shorts in the existing five-part series.

The MCU’s Spider-Man’s origins, how he came to be bitten by the radioactive spider, and his life before the change have been a mystery to fans – until now. With Marvel’s other animation series Spider-Man: Freshman Year, which will premiere sometime in 2024, fans will see Peter Parker’s journey to becoming the MCU’s Spider-Man and the beginning of his high-school life.

The series’ animation style will celebrate the comics that gave birth to the hero, and the panelists teased that Charlie Cox’s Daredevil will also appear in the series. The new suit fans saw Peter wearing at the end of No Way Home was also displayed on the panel. What’s more, Marvel announced a Spider-Man: Sophomore Year too!

In other news, What If Season 2 has a definite release period plus a green light for Season 3!

SDCC 2022 Day 2
What If…?

What If Season 2 will arrive on Disney+ early in 2023 and features new characters like Hela, Odin, The Mandarin, and more. We will see Tony Stark on Sakaar (Thor: Ragnarok), Odin VS The Mandarin, Captain Carter meeting The Winter Soldier (Steve Roger’s as Hydra’s deadliest weapon?), and more!

The first episode of Season 2 was also shown at the panel. The panelists have confirmed Season 3 of What If, featuring more episodes set in different universes other than the MCU’s overlooked by The Watcher.

Speaking of What If, Marvel’s Zombies, a spinoff of the former animated series, has also been revealed to be out soon. Bryan Andrews, Director of the What If series, shared the spinoff’s concept art and background, also sharing that the series will premiere sometime in 2024.

And that’s not it! Marvel’s Zombies will be R-Rated making it the first Disney+ MCU series to be TV-MA. The show will follow a new group of survivors of the zombie universe, including Yelena Bulova (Black Widow), Katy Bishop (Hawkeye), Jimmy Woo (WandaVision), Ms. Marvel, Shang-Chi, Red Guardian (Black Widow), and Death Dealer.

Marvel Zombies

And last, but definitely not least, Marvel confirms the first look, character list, and release date of MCU’s upcoming animated X-Men project. X-Men ‘97 will bring back the iconic characters from the Fox film series of X-Men, like Charles Xavier, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Cyclops, Magneto, Jubilee, Rogue, Storm, Gambit, and more.

X-Men ‘97 Season 1 will release sometime in Fall 2023, and Marvel has already confirmed a Season 2. But the twist? The superhero team will be led by their arch-enemy Magneto in the MCU animated series! Also, the X-Men films are now in original story order on Disney+.

If Marvel’s Day 2 at Comic-Con was big, we can expect Day 3 to be even bigger since the awaited Mega Panel headed by Kevin Feige, Head of Marvel Studios, will be up next!

SDCC 2022 Day 3

Marvel Studios’ Mega Panel was held at Hall H on Day 3 of Comic-Con 2022, and Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, has made some big announcements for the closing of MCU’S Phase Four and the beginning of Phase 5.

The Mega Panel opened up The Multiverse Saga and welcomed fans to view MCU’s plans regarding Phase Five and even beyond that, with new series and movies added to the ever-growing franchise.

Multiverse Saga

The movies announced and explored include Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Blade, Avengers: Secret Wars, Captain America: New World Order, Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four, Avengers: Kang Dynasty, Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania, and Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 3.

The shows announced and explored include Echo, Loki Season 2, Ironheart, Daredevil: Born Again, and Agatha: Coven Of Chaos. With many details to be shared and explained, Kevin Feige didn’t let even a minute of his hour-long panel go to waste.

Disney+ Series She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, starring Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, Tim Roth as Abomination, Jameela Jamil as Tatiana, gets a new poster and trailer!

The action-adventure legal drama series will premiere on 17th August 2022, with a new episode every Wednesday.

Official Trailer | She-Hulk: Attorney at Law | Disney+

The nine-part series will feature the story of Jennifer Walters, attorney to superhumans, and how she deals with her job while learning under her cousin, The Hulk, all there is to the green-skinned monster. Tatiana and Abomination serve as the main antagonists of the series.

The new trailer highlights the camaraderie between the Hulk cousins, shows the growing population of superhumans, states that Jennifer will represent Roth’s Abomination’s attorney, and introduces a new villain, Tatiana, along with a possible new ally for She-Hulk, Daredevil.

Apart from Charlie Cox’s cameo, Benedict Wong from Doctor Strange also appears in the trailer. He warns Jennifer that their “universe is at the edge of a precipice,” and any more world-ending mishaps might topple it into an inversion (explained in Doctor Strange In Multiverse Of Madness).

Next up is Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, a sequel to the 2018 film, and we finally have an official poster and trailer for the 2022 film. The film stars Letitia Wright, Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, and Martin Freeman.

Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever | Official Teaser

The trailer begins with remorseful music in the air as shots of Nakia, Ramonda, Okoye, and Shuri show the nation grieving their king, T’Challa’s death. The film’s writers had not recast T’Challa’s role after the sad passing away of Chadwick Boseman, who played the hero in the first film and wrote the new script with Ramonda assuming the role of Queen.

The trailer shows Wakanda, the most powerful nation in the world above water, at war with the sea-dwelling Mayans and their king, Namor. Wakanda, under Ramonda’s rule and probably Shuri’s new role as Black Panther, must fight for their place in the world after revealing their secret and against Namor’s army.

The trailer doesn’t focus on who wears the Black Panther suit at the end of the trailer, but there are more surprises. Shuri has a new look in the sequel, we see Dominique Thorne’s Riri Williams/Ironheart in Wakanda working with Shuri to develop more advanced tech, and fans now have a better look at Tenoch Huerta’s Namor.

Kevin Feige has announced that with She-Hulk: Attorney At Law and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the MCU will wrap up Phase 4.

Speaking of Riri Williams, Dominique Thorne will don the titular character’s role in her new solo series Ironheart. Marvel has announced that the sci-fi superhero show will come to Disney+ in Fall 2023. The show will follow the story of Riri Williams, a.k.a. Ironheart, a genius inventor at par with Tony Stark, and her suit of armor may even outshine Iron Man’s.

Ironheart

Three other MCU films are slated for release in 2023. The movies in releasing order are Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 3, and Blade. So, let’s take up the updates for these three in the above chronology.

Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania is the third film in the Ant-Man film series starring Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Kathryn Newton, and Bill Murray.

Ant-Man And The Wasp Quantumania

Marvel shared a new poster at the SDCC panel along with the release date for the film, February 17, 2023. Some footage from the film was also shown at Hall H, including shots of Scott Lang reading a book he wrote, Bill Murrays as the villain Krylar, and a scene with Kang saying, “You’re an Avenger…Have I killed you before?”

The upcoming film will feature Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) facing the most dangerous and formidable foe of their superhero lives, Kang The Conqueror, a time-traveling multiversal enemy.

Jonathan Majors plays Kang, an alternate version of He Who Remains (another name of Kang), and will be joining Bill Murray’s villainous character against Scott and his team. MODOK, a dangerous character featured in Marvel Comics, will make his MCU debut in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.

Releasing on May 5, 2023, is Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 3 with the heroics misfits encroaching on a dangerous and exciting new adventure. Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillis, and Sean Gunn are set to reprise their roles.

SDCC 2022 Day 3
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Chukwudi Iwuji showed up at the Marvel Panel in his costume as The High Evolutionary to provide more background on his character and his excitement about having joined the MCU. The trailer for Vol. 3 was also shown at Comic-Con. James Gunn returns to the director’s chair for the third installment, having directed the previous two films.

Blade

And finally, in the last MCU film in 2023, Blade will welcome a new superhero into the MCU, one whose entry has been anticipated for quite a while by fans. Kevin Feige disclosed the film, starring Mahershala Ali in the lead, will begin shooting in October 2022 and premiere in theatres on November 3, 2023.

2023 will also bring four new arrivals on Disney+ under the MCU series. The shows in releasing order are Secret Invasion, Echo, Loki Season 2, and Agatha: Coven Of Chaos. So, let’s get down to all the updates for the upcoming MCU shows!

SDCC 2022 Day 3
Secret Invasion

Samuel L. Jackson returns to the MCU after Spider-Man: Far From Home as Nick Fury, an excellent spy, impromptu manager of the Avengers, and former president of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Nick Fury and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) team up with Captain Marvel ally Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), a Skrull, and covertly stop the shapeshifting alien race of the Skrulls from invading and taking over Earth.

Martin Freeman and Don Cheadle also reprise their roles of Everett Ross, a CIA agent, and James Rhodes, a.k.a. War Machine, respectively in the series.

Cobie Smulders, who was at Hall H during the reveal of the release date of the series, disclosed that “this is a darker show” and “it’s going to be a bit of a guessing game” for Earth’s saviors to distinguish between the shapeshifting aliens and humans.

Two clips from the film displayed at the panel feature Nick Fury’s conversation with Maria Hill and Rhodey after his off-world vacation/hiding (Spider-Man Far From Home Post-Credits scene). The sci-f- drama will come to Disney+ in Spring 2023.

Following her introduction in the MCU show Hawkeye (2021), Alaqua Cox’s Maya Lopez/Echo will be returning to Disney+ with her solo series, Echo, in Summer 2023.

SDCC 2022 Day 3
Echo First Look

The show will follow her return to her hometown after the events that transpired in New York City, where she must reconnect with her Native American roots, community, and family and face her past.

SDCC 2022 Day 3
Echo

The show stars Alaqua Cox as Echo, Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin, and Zahn McClarnon as William Lopez, Maya’s deceased father.

Kevin Feige usually wears a cap to his panels at Comic-Con, and this time was no different. But what was interesting this time was what was on it. For SDCC 2022, Kevin Feige wore a cap with Miss Minutes on it. Remember Miss Minutes, the symbol of the TVA? Loki season 1 is where we saw the TVA’s involvement in the multiverse of timelines.

Season 2 of Loki was confirmed before SDCC, and now Feige has revealed the release date for the sci-fi action-adventure focusing on Loki’s stay at the TVA following his death in Avengers: Infinity War. The fantasy thriller, with six episodes, will stream on Disney+ in Summer 2023.

Tom Hiddleston, Tara Strong, Owen Wilson, Sophia DiMartino, and Jonathan Majors will reprise their roles in Season 2 of Loki, whose shooting has already begun.

SDCC 2022 Day 3
Loki Season 2

If anyone should get some credit for revealing Wanda’s true nature in WandaVision, it should go to Agatha Harkness, a formidable witch herself. After her story was briefly surmised in WandaVision, fans have been clamoring for her to have her solo series, and Marvel has a way to appease their fans and give them exactly what they want.

Agatha Coven of Chaos

Agatha: Coven Of Chaos, formerly titled Agatha: House of Harkness, will come to Disney+ in Winter 2023. Neither the plot nor the cast list is privy to the public, but we know that Kathryn Hahn will return to play Agatha Harkness after creating such an impression on MCU fans in WandaVision.

Phase 5 of the MCU will draw to a close with the following films and shows coming out in 2024: Daredevil: Born Again, Captain America: New World Order, and Thunderbolts.

SDCC 2022 Day 3
Daredevil Born Again

Before Disney+ won the rights to own Daredevil’s show from Netflix, the series already had three seasons. But Marvel is bringing back Charlie Cox’s Daredevil/Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin/Wilson Fisk for an original 18-episode series to Disney+ in Spring 2024.

After Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) left the mantle of Captain America, along with his shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), The Falcon had a makeover as the new Captain America. Following his acceptance, he had a hard time being viewed as the hero Steve knew he would be.

But his successful journey to being Captain America, with the help of Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), in The Falcon And The Winter Soldier (2021), has now sealed his identity as a dual superhero. Anthony Mackie’s Captain America gets his first film, Captain America: New World Order, releasing in theatres on May 3, 2024.

SDCC 2022 Day 3
Captain America: New World Order

And ending Phase 5 of the MCU is a new group of superheroes, which is cause for excitement and intrigue since the identities, both secret and super, are unknown to us. Kevin Feige announced that “an exciting new group of heroes” will star in the 2024 film Thunderbolts, releasing on July 26.

SDCC 2022 Day 3
Thunderbolts

2024 will not only be the year marking the end of Phase 5 of the MCU but also the beginning of Phase 6. Phase 6 will be with the MCU returning to Marvel’s roots and bringing back a team of superheroes, officially under the Marvel name.

That’s right! Marvel will soon begin production for the Fantastic Four reboot and give the MCU its version of Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Susan Storm (The Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (The Human Torch), and Ben Grim (The Thing).

SDCC 2022 Day 3
Fantastic Four

Fans have already seen MCU’s casting decision for Reed Richards in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, where The Office actor John Krasinski donned the role of the “smartest man alive” and was a part of the Illuminati.

The other two Phase 6 projects that have been announced will blow MCU fans’ minds because Kang is finally here! After his appearance in Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantamania, Kang The Conqueror will reign as the antagonist in the latest Avengers project, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

The Avengers we refer to have changed from the original six to numerous superheroes. And with the rise in superheroes, the power of the villains increases too – along with the scale of destruction.

SDCC 2022 Day 3
Avengers The Kang Dynasty

In the beginning, it was Loki, followed by Ultron, and finally the Purple Titan, Thanos. Kang The Conqueror is stronger than any of them and thus poses the biggest threat faced by the MCU’s Avengers. The fifth Avengers film will hit theatres on May 2, 2025, six years after its predecessor.

And now, we have reached the end of the announcements on Day 3 at Hall H of SDCC 2022. And we’ve saved the best for last! The sixth installment in the Avenger Franchise, wrapping Phase 6 and The Multiverse Saga up, is Avengers: Secret Wars. The film is set for release on November 7, 2025.

Rumor has it, this will be the final Avengers film featuring Kang as the main antagonist, whose entry has been set up since Loki Season 1.

SDCC 2022: All You Need to Know About MCU Panel and Events
Avengers Secret Wars

Another rumor floating around, popular among fans, is Scarlet Witch’s survival after Kang saved her from sacrificing herself in Doctor Strange Multiverse Of Madness. After all, Scarlet Witch is supposed to be the destroyer or the savior of the multiverse.

Phase 5 and 6 of the MCU may have more additions in these upcoming three years, but for now, this is all Marvel has disclosed about the future projects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The final day of Comic-Con 2022 is next, and with it, Marvel’s last panel celebration of the Women Of Marvel. We’ll keep you updated on all the significant details of Day 4.

SDCC 2022 Day 4

Next up is the final day of Comic-Con 2022. And with it comes Marvel’s last panel, celebrating the Women of Marvel. The panelists included famous female writers at Marvel Comics for multiple heroes, including Shuri’s trilogy, Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur, Spider-man’s Social Dilemma, Protectors of Wakanda, and The Winter Soldier.

With this, Marvel Studios has wrapped up their visit at Comic-Con 2022, and they’ve taken fans through a long list of exciting new arrivals and more updates for Phase 5 and Phase 6 of the MCU. With D23 Expo coming up in September, fans still have a chance to dive deeper into the MCU’s future with more surprises and exciting news coming their way in a couple of months.
