Season 17 Finale of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Could Just Be the Series Finale

We could soon be bidding farewell to Grey’s Anatomy, as the ongoing season might turn out to be the final one. Currently in its 17th season, the show is focusing on the coronavirus pandemic, bringing down the number of total episodes to sixteen from the usual twenty-four.

After having aired the first six episodes last year, the series will be returning from a three-month hiatus, and its premiere will coincide with that of Station 19, the second spin-off show of Grey’s Anatomy. Presently in production, the finale is assumed to be dropping sometime in May.

The show, which was created by Shonda Rhimes, continues to be one of the longest-running primetime TV series ever and has also been very successful on streaming services like Netflix. Attracting new viewers every day, Grey’s Anatomy is ABC Studios’ number one show.

Furthermore, Ellen Pompeo, who plays the leading role, is also coming to the end of her two-season deal while showrunner Krista Vernoff also seems to be in talks for negotiations. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Vernoff aims to write the last episode both as a season finale and as a series finale since no official deals regarding the show’s future have been made yet.

Renewal negotiations have been going on for months between Disney and ABC Signature. However, because of the indecisions surrounding the show, Vernhoff is under pressure to write an ending that works both as a season finale and as a series finale to ensure viewers are satisfied with the outcome.

She has also asked the studios to inform her of the final decision before production resumes as she has “…plans for both contingencies”. Given the show’s success, it indeed is a shame to have the showrunner put in such a position where they are kept in the dark and are unaware of what lies ahead.

Here’s hoping that things will sort out and audiences can look forward to a gratifying season finale or series finale.
