Paramount + to End the Legendary Star Trek: Discovery After Season 5

The fifth season will finally mark the end of a very long road for Star Trek: Discovery.

The show was created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman and premiered in 2017. Throughout four seasons, it has followed the epic journey of Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), who went from a disgraced Starfleet Commander to the Captain of the USS Discovery.

The series features a talented ensemble cast, including Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, Wilson Cruz, Blu del Barrio, David Ajala, and Tig Notaro.

While initially a prequel, the show is now set in the 32nd century. Star Trek: Discovery has received numerous accolades, including 2 Emmy Awards out of 10 nominations.

According to Deadline, it has been confirmed that the upcoming fifth season of Star Trek: Discovery will be the series’ final installment. The season is scheduled to debut on Paramount+ in early 2024.

Considering the extended period between this announcement and the season’s premiere, Paramount+ plans to honor the show’s legacy through several events next year.

Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Discovery has been the longest-running Star Trek series on Paramount + and is a cornerstone of the vast TV franchise. The show debuted back when the streaming platform was still called CBS All Access and foreshadowed many future developments.

One of these is the new spin-off Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, featuring Anson Mount in the role of Captain Christopher Pike.

However, shows that aren’t spin-offs also owe their existence to the epic series. The Good Fight and several other Star Trek series were made possible by the success of Star Trek: Discovery. This helped to keep the CBS All-Access streaming service afloat when times were hard for the streaming platform.

Thanks to this success, CBS All-Access rebranded to Paramount+ and expanded its Star Trek content library. Among the series created since then are Star Trek: Picard, a sequel to The Next Generation, and the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy.

Star Trek: Discovery also served as a model for the Star Trek franchise to expand its representation and diversity in casting while remaining faithful to the beloved characters of the past.

Both veteran and fresh actors have breathed new life into iconic characters from different eras of the series. This includes Ethan Peck portraying Spock in Strange New Worlds, Kate Mulgrew reprising her role as Kathryn Janeway in Prodigy, and most of the TNG crew returning to their respective roles in the current season 3 of Picard.
