House of the Dragon Episode 7 Deviates From The Books, Changes Ser Laenor’s Fate.

Rhaenyra and Daemon might do many things to get their love recognized, but can Rhaenyra betray her current husband and plot his death to get what she wants?

Well, Episode 7 definitely leaned towards that possibility but ended with a significant last-minute twist.

According to Martin’s book Fire and Blood, on which House of the Dragon is based, Ser Laenor Velaryon was not supposed to survive. In the books, it isn’t clear if Ser Qarl kills Laenor by accident or does so upon Prince Dameon’s command, but the bottom line is that he dies.

And the way Episode 7 was unraveling, viewers were expecting the show to follow the same. But fans were pleasantly surprised when the depraved prince and desperate princess proved them wrong in the most shocking twists in GOT history.

Last few minutes of the episode explained in detail how Rhaenyra and Daemon managed to kill two birds with one stone. They got rid of Laenor and, with Ser Qarl away from the Targaryen drama, ensured their happily ever after.

Daemon slayed an unnamed guard while Laenor and Ser Qarl dueled publicly in Lord Corlys’ hall. When the Kingsguard and the Velaryons arrived at the scene, they find a charred body with Laenor’s clothes and his necklace in the fireplace.

While the Velaryons mourned, Daemon and Rhaenyra celebrated this cold-blooded murder by uniting in matrimony. But this was just a charade for the public eye, for them to fear and believe in the power of Iron Throne’s heir.

In reality, they had planned with Laenor and planted a burned body of an unnamed guard, Daemon had just killed. Laenor had then escaped to Essos with shaved head and disguised clothes along with Ser Qarl via sea.

Maybe somewhere along the story, Laenor might return to Targaryen politics, but it is doubtful as his involvement in the story is no longer crucial.

House of the Dragon returns to HBO Max every Sunday with a new episode, and now, fans can expect such deviations from the original inspiration and a fresh take on Martin’s story.
