‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ Starts Filming next Week, Says Faithe Herman

Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the sequel to the lighthearted entry in the DCEU, Shazam!, will start production with star Faithe Herman next week. The child actor played the young Darla Dudley in the first movie and will continue her role in the upcoming one, which is set to release sometime in 2023.

Faithe, who just finished filming This Is Us Season 5, definitely seems to have her schedule packed. She shared the news via her Twitter account:

Considering Shazam! 2 won’t premier until June 2023, the production is off to an early start. But this does make sense. The younger cast consisting of Billy (Asher Angel), Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer), Eugene (Ian Chen), Pedro (Jovan Armand), Darla (Faithe Herman), and Mary (Grace Fulton) will grow old if the filming is delayed.

Director David F. Sandberg had a casual discussion over this when WB jokingly asked him to just put fake beards on the kids. To this, his reply was:

“If Tom Cruise is going to space for real then we can wait for the kids to grow real beards! It’s an important plot point”

Apart from the child actors, the adult-sized heroes Ross Butler, Adam Brody, D.J. Cotrona, Meagan Good, and Michelle Borth will also be reprising their roles. And yes, let’s not forget the man in the titular role, fan-favorite Zachary Levi.

Though the plot details have been kept under wraps, we do know that Oscar winner Helen Mirren has been cast as the villain Hespera, a daughter of Atlas. Kalypso, Hespera’s sister, will be played by Lucy Liu.

One week ago, Shazam! 2 star Ross Butler had teased fresh new costumes for the upcoming sequel. According to him, this was one of the major upgrades from the last film. You can check out his social media post below:

2019’s Shazam!, a bubbly, refreshingly delightful movie from the otherwise gritty DC Extended Universe, was very well received. It had grossed 366 million dollars at the box office.

The movie followed a teenager Billy Batson as he was chosen by the ancient wizard Shazam (Hounsou) to be his new champion. By saying “Shazam,” Billy could transform into an adult hero with various superpowers.

Billy used the staff of the wizard to share his powers with his foster siblings, transforming them into adult superheroes like him. They then overpowered Sivana, and returned the Eye and the Sins to their prison.
