It’s only been two episodes, and Jennifer Walters, a.k.a She-Hulk, has already been on a rollercoaster ride. In the first episode, Walters gets infected with her cousin Bruce Banner’s blood which led her to become She-Hulk. Following her training, Walters returns to work, only to be outed in public when she has to fight off Titania in open court.
In Episode 2 of the comedy-legal drama, the public celebrates She-Hulk for saving every innocent civilian in court and is labeled as the superhero of the day. But Jen is obstinate enough to decline the incoming adoration since she wants to be a lawyer and not a vigilante.
Her hopes of being a lawyer are temporarily dashed when her boss fires her from the D.A.’s office after losing their trial against the giant law firm GLK & H. Jennifer immediately applies to other law firms and private practices, but to her dismay, no one wants her as a lawyer because she is also the She-Hulk.
Disappointed, “sad and lonely,” Jennifer is invited to a dinner with her family only to be bombarded with questions about being a superhero, which she has never wanted to be, even after transforming into She-Hulk.
She ponders aloud in a monologue to her father whether she should have saved all those people. Her father consoles her by saying that lawyer or not, she has always helped people and will continue to do so with her superpowers if she wishes to.
Cheered slightly after her father’s advice, Jennifer quietly wallows after the messy family dinner in a bar alone, the same bar she was celebrated as a superhero and fired as a lawyer. But then, Mr. Holliway of GLK & H approaches her and offers her a job at his firm as the head of a new division. Jennifer immediately accepts under the condition that she will be allowed to bring Nikki, her best friend, in as her paralegal.
But her quota of surprises seems to have not met its end as Holliway informs her on her first day of work that the division she will be heading is the Superhuman Law Division. It turns out that they only hired her because of her identity as She-Hulk.
The real reason behind her hiring pulls Jennifer’s mood down. But Nikki’s celebratory attitude and a warm welcome by a colleague give Jen hope that she can work as a lawyer without ever having the label of a superhero.
A mood damper in the shape of Holliway approaches her and gives her an ultimatum—represent Emil Blonsky, The Abomination, in his parole trial or the job offer will be revoked.
Now faced with a massive dilemma, Jennifer has to decide if she should help The Abomination be free in the world. She’s further torn by the fact that the same monster tried to kill her cousin Bruce and leveled the city of Harlem in doing so. Holliway suggests she meet with Blonsky and make her decision by the end of the day.
Jennifer visits Emil Blonsky, who seems to have returned to his human state, not the monster that fans saw in The Incredible Hulk (2008). Blonsky makes his case to Walters and shows remorse for his actions, imploring Jen to see his side of the story.
He tells her that he was hired by the US government and made into The Abomination to take down Hulk, the bad guy. But now The Hulk is an Avenger, and he is still locked up in prison, feared and hated, lastly asking, “Where’s the justice in that?”
Jennifer contemplates her decision and calls Bruce to hear if he is okay with her representing Blonsky. Smart Hulk reassures her that he had made his peace with Blonsky a while ago, now that the Hulk was “a different person now, literally.” This is a reference to Banner being played by Mark Ruffalo now instead of Edward Norton, who had played him in The Incredible Hulk.
Finally at ease with her decision, Walters calls Holliway to confirm that she will be taking Blonsky’s case. Pleased with her acceptance, Holliway wishes her a good evening and also asks her to turn on the news channel.
As she does that, the breaking news puts a wrench in her plan to win Blonsky’s case because it seems like The Abomination has broken out of prison and is in an underground fight with what looks like a wizard of the mystic arts.
The wizard that The Abomination was fighting in the illegal underground match could be the same mystic arts user that fans saw in the trailer, which could mean Episode 3 will see Wong’s debut on the lawyer show. More info about Titania’s attack, The Abomination’s fight, and his opponent will definitely be discussed in the episode airing next Thursday.
