There were far too many mentions of Sakaar and Sakaaran ships in She-Hulk for us to not raise an eyebrow. Was the Hulk visiting Sakaar? What business did he have there? Was he fighting a new enemy?
She-Hulk’s finale doesn’t disappoint (on many fronts) including the questions raised above. Here’s why the Hulk went back to Sakaar:
The Hulk shows up with his son Skaar at the end of She-Hulk’s finale. It seems like he fathered a son during his time on Sakaar, prior to Thor: Ragnarok. He was only recently made aware of it and returned to the planet to reunite with his son.
An MCU show/film cannot end without the introduction of a new character. It’s time to now dissect the Hulk, his time on Sakaar, and his son.
1. The Hulk on Sakaar in Thor: Ragnarök
The first time we see the Hulk on Sakaar is in Thor: Ragnarök, when the God of Thunder is imprisoned there and has to compete in a series of gladiator fights. In the film, Hulk (who has the vocabulary of a toddler) explains his presence there with gestures of a plane crashing.
In Age of Ultron, Hulk hijacks Ultron’s ship and then throws the villain back to Earth. But instead of coming back as well, he remains on the ship and goes AWOL.
In an interview with Cinemablend, Ragnarok production designer, Dan Hennah, explained that although Sakaar is quite far from Earth, the Hulk got there in Ultron’s ship by accidentally slipping into a wormhole or something.
In Ragnarök, Hulk seems to be enjoying his time on Sakaar, wining, dining, fighting, and the like. But he does ultimately leave the planet to help Thor with his mission against Hela.
2. Why did the Hulk go back to Sakaar during She-Hulk?
Not only do we see a Sakaaran ship in She-Hulk’s premiere episode, but later, there’s also a shot of the ship in space, indicating that Bruce was on board. It seems like the Hulk’s return to Sakaar took place simultaneously with the remaining She-Hulk episodes.
But I don’t think this is the first time that Bruce has gone back to Sakaar since Thor: Ragnarök. There’s a gladiator helmet in his lab in She-Hulk, which he definitely hadn’t carried back during Ragnarök.
This brings us to, why did Hulk go back to Sakaar? What is he doing there?
Thankfully, She-Hulk’s finale answers this: During his time on Sakaar (between Age of Ultron and Thor: Ragnarok), Hulk sired a child named Skaar, of whom he was unaware. He was probably informed about the same during She-Hulk and brings him back to Earth in the show’s finale.
We’re still not privy to what exactly happened on Sakaar or how Bruce reunited with Skaar. Right now, it’s also unsure if these events will be portrayed in any show/movie, or simply explained via some throwaway dialogues.
In the comics, too, Hulk unknowingly fathers a child on Sakaar when he is exiled there by the Illuminati. The MCU swapped out the Illuminati-betrayal story but is definitely keen on making Skaar a part of the MCU.
3. How is the Hulk’s child already an adult?
All of this said and done, there’s one thing that still doesn’t add up—how is Skaar already an adult? The timeline just doesn’t make sense.
Well, you see, Skaar is no ordinary kid. Skaar is said to have a fast growth rate and was already as smart as a preteen when he was born. Within a year, he grows into a teenager, both physically and mentally. So, all thanks to a clever comic book loophole, we see a more adult version of Skaar in She-Hulk. If you have noticed, most of the original Avengers now have a teen counterpart. So while Skaar’s introduction may take a huge departure from his comic book storyline, it’s still very much in keeping with what the MCU has planned for its Young Avengers.
4. About She-Hulk: Attorney at Law
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is an American superhero television series created by Jessica Gao for the streaming service Disney+, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Directed by Kat Coiro and Anu Valia, the show is a part of Phase Four of the MCU.
Jennifer Walters, Attorney to superhumans, must balance her job and identity as She-Hulk and decide which path is for her. Her journey is hurdled by dangerous enemies like The Abomination and Titania. Her cousin Bruce Banner trains her to live life as a green-skinned superhero.
The comedy-legal drama premiered on Disney+ on August 17, 2022, with weekly episodes every Wednesday. The show stars Tatiana Maslany, Mark Ruffalo, Tim Roth, Jameela Jamil, Benedict Wong, and Charlie Cox.
