Sheldon Could Drop Out of College in Young Sheldon S6B Premiere

CBS’s official synopsis for the winter premiere of Young Sheldon season 6 reveals that Sheldon will consider dropping out of college amidst the complications surrounding his grant database project.

Young Sheldon is a prequel to the popular sitcom, The Big Bang Theory and follows Sheldon Cooper through his troubled childhood and adolescence. The series wrapped up this year with only one episode in the month of December, which sets up Sheldon for a complicated future.

As Sheldon realizes the importance of databases, he comes up with an idea to aggregate all necessary information about the various grants being offered. This idea will make it easier for applicants and educational institutions offering grants to come in contact with each other.

However, things become complicated when people from East Texas Tech decide to fund Sheldon’s project, which was originally supposed to be a fun project. The season 6 finale ended with Sheldon deciding to go forward with the project on his own. However, the recently released season 6 winter premiere synopsis says otherwise.

CBS has released the official synopsis for the winter premiere of Young Sheldon season 6, titled “College Dropouts and the Medford Miracle.” Read the synopsis below:

Sheldon considers dropping out of college to focus on building his database. Also, George Sr. is frustrated when someone else gets credit for his football wins, on YOUNG SHELDON, Thursday, Jan. 5 (8:00-8:31 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and available to stream live and on-demand on Paramount+.

Sheldon Cooper has always held himself in a superior position compared to his peers, especially in The Big Bang Theory. Though he has always spoken highly of his superior intellect, Sheldon hardly ever mentioned his college days in The Big Bang Theory, as opposed to his school days.

However, Sheldon has always seen Ivy League colleges such as Princeton and MIT in an inferior light, despite his friends Leonard and Howard being ex-students of these universities. Considering his opinion about these colleges, fans would expect that Cooper himself attended one of the most highly rated institutions in the US.

This is why it comes as a surprise to many fans that Sheldon actually attended East Texas Tech for his graduation and not any highly regarded Ivy League institution. Though East Texas Tech is not a bad school, it is not on the same level as an Ivy League institution.

It has been mentioned in The Big Bang Theory that Sheldon holds a bachelor’s, master’s and PhD degree. So, it is unlikely that he will completely drop out of college in Young Sheldon. But it is possible that he leaves East Texas Tech and simply shifts to another school where he can complete his studies.

Sheldon’s personal arc mirrors that of Paige in Young Sheldon. Though their reasons were vastly different, both Paige and Sheldon considered dropping out of college. The 100th episode of Young Sheldon saw Paige struggling to cope with her parents’ divorce.

Since Paige is confirmed to be returning for Young Sheldon season 6B, it could be possible that her appearance has something to do with Sheldon’s future.

Apart from Sheldon’s personal arc, the winter premiere will also see George getting frustrated with his football team back at Medford High. Though George is happy to get his job back, his workplace situation could deteriorate his relationship with Mary.

Young Sheldon season 6 sees George and Mary’s relationship being repaired to a certain extent, but we already know that it will not last as it is mentioned in The Big Bang Theory that Sheldon’s parents weren’t together.
