Major Supe to Return to The Boys, Confirms Season 3 Showrunner

Eric Kripke, showrunner of The Boys, has revealed that Queen Maeve, a major supe in the series, will return after being apparently written off in the Season 3 finale.

The popular Prime superhero comedy tells the story of a group of vigilantes who have come together to take down The Seven, a group of commercialized superheroes, and Vought International, the corporate which grants them the license.

The series has earned immense critical appreciation since it began in 2019 and continues to be one of Prime’s most successful ventures. The Season 3 finale of The Boys aired on July 8, 2022, and the team is supposed to start filming for Season 4 in August.

Major Supe to Return to The Boys, Confirms Season 3 Showrunner
Queen Maeve

Queen Maeve’s arc was one of the best-written character arcs of Season 3. Maeve realizes that Soldier Boy has the ability to kill everyone in his vicinity. So, to protect her allies, she jumps out of the window with him, enduring the blast of his energy herself.

The audience naturally assumes her to be dead, but it is later revealed that she is alive, but has lost all her powers in the process. Maeve tells Starlight that she will be starting her life afresh, far away from everything, where Homelander would not be able to find her.

This was interpreted by fans as a hint at Maeve’s exit from The Boys. However, showrunner Kripke has assured us that Maeve’s exit is not permanent.

In an interview with TV Line, Kripke spoke about Maeve’s apparent exit from the show and confirmed whether we would be seeing her again.

The EP acknowledged that Maeve would be away from the show for a while, considering the Season 3 ending. However, since it has been confirmed in the show that Maeve is alive, there is always a possibility of her returning to the show in the future.

Further, Kripke confidently says that the show would not end without seeing more of Maeve, insisting that she would definitely return in the future.

Queen Maeve

Kripke also explained that they did not want a tragic ending for Maeve in the show, like she gets in the original comics. In the comics, Maeve dies a heroic death while saving Starlight from Homelander.

According to Kripke, Maeve made the right choices and thus, got her much-deserved happy ending. Despite all the violence and gore, the show also has a moral ground.

Moreover, Kripke did not want to kill off an openly bisexual character like Maeve and follow the Bury Your Gays trope in shows. He wanted Maeve to have a better future and not aimlessly kill her off.

Maeve is one of the best-written characters in The Boys and her presence in the series will surely be missed by the audience. However, it would be interesting to see how the makers would bring her back in the future.

About The Boys

The Boys is an American satirical superhero streaming television series developed by Eric Kripke for Prime Video. Based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, which was originally published by DC Comics under their Wildstorm imprint before moving to Dynamite Entertainment, it follows the eponymous team of vigilantes as they combat superpowered individuals who abuse their abilities.

The show is a satirical take on the superhero genre and showcases a world where superheroes are corporatized and controlled by companies. What happens when these superheroes step out of line and rub some boys the wrong way, is the story.
