Showrunner Teases Non-Living Villain for ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ S4.

The fourth season of Star Trek: Discovery might move in a new direction by introducing a completely new kind of villain—a non-breathing entity. Showrunner Alex Kurtzman’s comments have suggested that the antagonist of the new season might be a concept, something that is very relevant to the times and has divided the world deeply.

Season 3 of the show ended with some major developments. The mystery of The Burn was solved and there was a time jump that brought the characters to the 32nd century. With the show set to feature the first all-female bridge crew, and the majority challenge being to rebuild the United Federation of Planets, the fourth season is one of the most eagerly awaited.

In an interview with Deadline, Kurtzman revealed some hints about the big bad in season 4. Osyraa, the leader of the Emerald Chain, will still be a threat to Michael Burnham and the crew of the Discovery, but she will not be the primary antagonist. The showrunner said that season 4 would be “diving deep into science,” and further suggested:

There have been many kinds of villains over the course of Star Trek. What happens when the villain is not actually any kind of living, breathing entity, but something else? How do you solve that problem?

Judging from Kurtzman’s words, it does not seem that the villains will be robots or other AI.

Burnham will have to face the task of rallying other worlds into the Federation, and at the same time, letting them maintain their own culture and identity. These clues might suggest that Burnham’s obstacle will be racism or prejudice against different races, which often causes disruptions in the world.

What do you think? Who/what can be the villain of Star Trek: Discovery season 4?
