Snyder Cut “Not Enough Movie” For Zack Snyder’s Superman Story

Zack Snyder has said that his cut of Justice League wasn’t able to encapsulate or delve into his narrative of Superman fully. 2013’s Man of Steel builds upon the origin story of Clark Kent/Superman (Henry Cavill), who is sent from the planet of Krypton as the last surviving member of his race.

His adoptive father, Jonathan Kent, believes the world is not ready for Clark’s powers to be unleashed and, in the process of protecting his son, sacrifices himself. However, when General Zod invades Earth, Clark is forced to reveal his identity.

Following the aftermath of the battle with Zod, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice explores the consequences of a superbeing existing among humans. Instigated by his Knightmare, where he sees an evil Superman, Bruce Wayne is compelled to believe that Kal-El will, given the chance, wipe out all of human existence. But Batman is proven wrong right before Superman’s death in the battle with Doomsday.

Superman’s arc was thus to be further explored in Snyder’s five-movie plan, of which the recently released Snyder Cut Justice League was the first. However, many aspects have derailed Snyder’s plans for the DC Extended Universe.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Zack Snyder spoke about the fear of Clark revealing his true identity in Man of Steel and Jonathan’s voice in Justice League telling him that “it’s time.” As for what’s changed amongst both films, Snyder noted Superman’s character development, saying the Superman in Justice League has established his place among humanity.

The director also expressed that more screen time was necessary to truly explore Clark’s story. In his statement, he mentions:

“In the end, if there were two more movies, the last movie really is a Superman movie in a lot of ways.”

Even though Superman doesn’t appear in the bulk of the film, his initial absence and lingering presence attribute to the stakes. When he does reappear, Kal-El is very much the iconic figure who must resume his role as protector of humanity.

The Snyder sequels would have focused on several arcs, including Darkseid’s invasion, Lois Lane’s death, Superman becoming a threat to humanity, among many others. On that note, it makes sense that one film doesn’t do justice to Snyder’s entire vision.

About Justice League Snyder Cut

Co-produced by Warner Bros. and DC Films, Justice League Snyder Cut is the fifth film of the DC Extended Universe and based on the DC Comics superhero team. As the theatrical release, Zack Snyder’s Justice League features an ensemble cast that includes Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, and Ray Fisher.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League follows the Justice League—Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg—as they attempt to save the world from the catastrophic threat of Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons.

Although fans have asked for Snyderverse to continue Warner Bros has no such plans.
