Miles & Co. Fight Villains Across the Spider-Verse in CinemaCon Clip

Four years after 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse brought the Spidey-verse to life, Sony has finally gifted fans with major updates about the returning two sequels during CinemaCon 2022.

The studio revealed the first 15 minutes of the first sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, promising animations in its signature and some new styles, which would make it seem like the pages of a comic book had bled onto the film reel.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will follow Miles Morales once again as he groups up with Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099, Jessica Drew, and Spider-Gwen to take on a powerful super-villain.

Producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller took to the stage to explain why they couldn’t do a sizzle reel before playing the raw footage consisting of incomplete CGI, WIP footage, and sketches,

“We don’t have a sizzle reel. Here’s a secret. Please don’t tell Tom (Rothman) this… We told him it would be the same size as the last one, but we couldn’t do it. It’s the largest crew of an animated movie ever. This movie has 1,000 people working on it. The number of characters. This movie has 240 characters. It takes place in six universes. That’s why we couldn’t do the sizzle reel. However, we could show you the first 15 minutes of the movie.”

The 15-minute footage of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse gives us a glimpse at the film’s primary characters. These include the voices of Shameik Moore as Miles, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, Issa Rae as Jessica Drew, and Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099.

The footage starts with Gwen and Miles Morales meeting up to beat Vulture while also focusing on Gwen’s relationship with her father. It is revealed that by the end of the first film, the Spider-villains had become a multiversal problem.

We then see a Spider-Man from another dimension, Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099. As they’re fighting, O’Hara calls for backup, and Jessica Drew, a pregnant black lady with a big afro, makes her entrance on a motorcycle.

When a helicopter crashes into a building and all three Spider “persons” use webs to stop it from causing any more damage. Gwen’s own father, Captain Stacy, puts her under arrest for the murder of Peter Parker. She takes off her mask to reveal her identity, and her father is both shocked and heartbroken. Spider-Man 2099 and Jessica Drew save her and take her through their portal to stop the multiversal mess.

Cut to Earth 610, where Miles is late for a meeting with his parents and the principal over his future and education. His Spider-sense tingles, so he has to leave, and so does Miles’ dad, after getting a call for a supervillain disturbance. The principal then tells Miles’ mom, “He’s lying to you. And I think you know it.”

The footage is enough to have fans talking about it for a while now. But besides the footage, Sony also revealed the second sequel’s title to be Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

This was an exciting update, considering that the studio had recently decided to push the two films’ release dates further.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now set to be released on June 2, 2023, with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse on March 29, 2024.
