Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a “Very Ambitious Sequel”

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will turn out different and even more unique than its predecessor, according to the writers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller in an interview.

Talking to Collider, Miller shared that the upcoming sequel will see each dimension inside the movie’s art style.

When the first installment, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, hit the screens, the after-effects of the multi-dimensional animated movie left everyone surprised. It seems like Miller, Lord, and everyone in the animation team is currently upping their game with even more ambitious ideas.

Lord talked about working on the sequel, spilling on how “hard” he and Miller have made Miles Morales and their lives.

As Chris pointed out, we only like to do things that are hard. So, we made it really hard on ourselves and we’ve made it pretty hard on Miles too.

Passing the mic to Miller to explain it better, the screenwriter revealed that each dimension would have its own art style as if drawn by different artists. Viewers did get a glimpse into these art styles when the super cool teaser for Across the Spider-Verse dropped.

It is, as Phil said, a very ambitious sequel, because we didn’t want to just sort of do the same thing again. And so, the idea that we’d be going to different dimensions really opened up an opportunity artistically to have each world have its own art style, and to be able to push the folks at ImageWorks to develop a way to have each dimension feel like it was drawn by a different artist’s hand.

Christopher Miller

The idea of different art styles intertwining, though incredibly tough, pushed the boundaries of possibilities in the animation industry. Into the Spider-Verse mixed all dimensions of Spider-Man cartoons, weaving 3D cartoon, noir black-and-white comic style, and even anime style flawlessly into one movie.

A bonus moment in the interview is the writers awkwardly trying to avoid the question of Tom Holland and Zendaya’s appearance in the upcoming Spider-Verse sequels.

With a range of multi-dimensional things opening up in Marvel and the very white lies of Andrew Garfield, it wouldn’t hurt to say that the awkward laughs of Miller and Lord actually hint at No Way Home’s cast appearing in Miles’ universe.
