Squid Game S2 Might Focus On The Frontman and Gong Yoo, Says Director

SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from Squid Game.

If there ever was going to be Squid Game season 2, director Hwang Dong-hyuk already knows the potential storylines he would want to focus on. Season 1 ended on multiple loose ends, never really giving away the bigger picture.

In Squid Game season 2, the director wants to explore the relationship between the brothers and the mystery behind the recruiter, played by veteran actor Gong Yoo.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the creator revealed that there are multiple plotlines to talk about. Even though he hasn’t yet confirmed a season 2, the explosive success has ended up people wanting to know more.

Hwang Dong-hyuk shared that the major plotlines he would want to explore are the Front Man (the one who was the middle-man between the VIPs and the players in charge of the dangerous games) and the recruiter Gong Yoo (who plays ddakji to recruit players)

In the season finale, the Front Man was revealed to be Hwang In-ho, detective Hwang Jun-ho’s brother. To keep his status in the games safe, he ends up killing his brother, the detective. But is he really dead? Not by the looks of the director stating he’d want to explore more.

But there are some other stories in the series that have not been addressed. For example, the story of the police officer and the story of his brother, The Front Man. So if I end up creating season two, I’d like to explore that storyline — what is going on between those two brothers?

In addition, viewers actually enter the Squid Game world in the show through the Train to Busan actor Gong Yoo. His cameo, playing with and slapping Gi-hun, made waves across social media.

But the question is: Who is the recruiter? How was he recruited? How does he know who to pick?

In an interview with The Chosun Ilbo, a K-media outlet, the director had revealed that Gong Yoo, the Recruiter, is no more than an employee who climbed the ‘trustable employee’ ladder of Player 001/VIP, Oh Il-nam. The VIP, in return, allowed him to leave the made-up world and work in the real world.

Then there’s always the lead character, Seung Gi-hun, who is now ready to take revenge by taking part in another game.

And then I could also go into the story of that recruiter in the suit who plays the game of ddakji with Gi-hun and gives him the card in the first episode. And, of course, we could go with Gi-hun’s story as he turns back, and explore more about how he’s going to navigate through his reckoning with the people who are designing the games.

Multiple angles still need to be discussed. How did Hwang In-ho, a winner of the previous game, become The Front Man? Who are the masked men? Who are the VIPs?

While the director has stated that it was stressful for him to be the sole director and writer, a season 2 does definitely seem far. But the unexpected success might bring him back to give fans what they’re asking for.
