O Yeong-Su Makes History by Winning Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes

The talented South Korean actor O Yeong-Su, who played the role of Player 001 in Squid Game, won the Best Supporting Actor Award at the Golden Globes 2022.

It is a historic win for South Koreans as O Yeong-Su became the first Korean to win the prestigious award individually.

The veteran actor played the character of Oh Il-Nam, aka Player 001, in Squid Game. He bowled the audience away from his incredibly skilled acting, especially towards the end, where a key twist was revealed, making viewers more in awe of the Old Man’s talent.

O Yeong-Su was nominated as the Best Supporting Actor in Television alongside Kieran Culkin from Succession, Brett Goldstein from Ted Lasso, and Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass in The Morning Show.

The actor shared his gratitude through Netflix, stating (Translation from Soompi):

After hearing the news of the award, I told myself, ‘I’m a decent guy,’ for the first time in my life. Now, it’s no longer ‘us within the world,’ but it’s ‘the world within us.’ While embracing the scent of our culture and while embracing the love for my family deep in my heart, I give thanks to everyone in the world. I hope you all live beautiful lives. Thank you.

Though the Golden Globes 2022 was boycotted by the film industry, certain wins of the event are celebrated by many online.

Despite being in the Korean entertainment industry for the past few decades, O Yeong-Su had never seen or imagined himself being popular on such a global scale.

In October last year, the actor appeared on a popular South Korean talk show, How do you Play?, discussing his newfound popularity.

Viewers also saw the difference between O Yeong-Su and Squid Game’s Old Man. The 77-year-old actor revealed that he had no grand ambitions. His humble personality shone throughout the talk show.
