Paramount+ Renews Star Trek: Prodigy Due to Series’ Popularity

Star Trek: Prodigy, the animated series at Paramount+, has just been renewed for Season 2.

The first season hasn’t even finished airing all of its episodes yet but has quickly become the streaming service’s top-performing kids’ animated title.

The company then wasted no time in announcing the renewal and ordered a 10-episode second season.

Star Trek franchise boss Alex Kurtzman stated,

If Prodigy is a success and works for everybody, then hopefully, there will be lots of conversations about how to build it out from there, because it’s just going to make sense for the company.

Prodigy Season 1 premiered its first two episodes on October 28. With new weekly episodes, the mid-season finale will be out on November 18. Following a brief hiatus, the second half of Season 1 will resume on January 6, 2022.

Season 2 of the series doesn’t have a definitive release date yet but will air sometime next year.

The series follows “a group of aliens who join together to explore the galaxy in search of a better, brighter future. The six main characters plunge into the world of Star Trek unknowingly, having no understanding of the ship which they have gained control of.”

Kurtzman wanted to introduce the world of Star Trek to a new, younger audience with this family-focused series. Prodigy is the fifth show in Kurtzman’s Star Trek universe, besides Picard, Lower Decks, Discovery, and Strange New Worlds.

Kurtzman’s plans also include a feature film related to other live-action projects like J.J. Abrams’ mystery Star Trek movie. Paramount Pictures CEO Brian Robbins told THR recently,

We’re working on several fronts and obviously Alex is the key for the franchise [on Paramount+]. J.J. has been the keeper of the franchise on the film side. We hope that as a company that we do what’s right for the franchise altogether.
