As the crew prepares to tackle the Gorn hatchlings by luring them into a trap, Hemmer, unfortunately, gets infected with their acid spit. When he realizes the acid has infected him with Gorn eggs as well, he separates himself from the rest of the group, ultimately sacrificing his own life. The rest of the crew, visibly shaken from the experience, is picked up by the Enterprise.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Episode 9 Recap
The crew is faced with a dangerous mission after Pike learns that the USS Peregrine has seemingly vanished in a communications dead zone. They decide to split up into two groups – the first being a landing party that will investigate the location where the ship was last seen and the rest will deliver essential supplies to space station K7.
The rescue team led by Pike arrive at the crash site and notice blood splatters around it, indicating some sort of foul play. After going through the Peregrine’s records, they find that it was overtaken by the Gorn. Upon further investigation, they stumble across an extraterrestrial seemingly protecting a young girl – the only human survivor of the crash.
Noonien suspects that there still might be Gorn present around the crash site and that the survivors could possibly already be infected. Her suspicions are confirmed when Gorn hatchlings emerge from the extraterrestrial and kill a cadet. To make matters worse, a blizzard traps the landing party in the Peregrine along with the Gorn hatchlings that seem to be growing dangerously fast.
