‘Star Wars’ Shooter ‘Republic Commando’ Leaked For Nintendo Switch

Reportedly, Star Wars: Republic Commando is making a return, and this time, it’ll be on Nintendo Switch, which means Nintendo fans may soon have the opportunity to travel a galaxy far, far away.

If the leak turns out to be true, this will be the first time the franchise will launch the shooter on a platform outside of Xbox consoles and PC.

Star Wars: Republic Commando was released in 2005, a couple of months before the George Lucas prequel trilogy would get its last movie, Star Wars: Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith. The game gave a glimpse at some vehicles and enemies from Episode 3, but it also managed to rise above modest teaser material.

Star Wars: Republic Commando has evolved as a cult classic, with gamers applauding its squad-based combat and story. Even though a planned sequel for Star Wars: Republic Commando was discontinued sometime in 2010, it looks like Nintendo Switch owners may get to play the original game soon.

The game builds up some of the events seen in George Lucas’ film, such as the Battle of Kashyyyk. The game had a pretty unexpected ending, apparently just teeing up the last act of Revenge of the Sith. Nevertheless, a sequel was planned. Though never released, hopes for a sequel have diminished over the years following EA’s sole domination over the franchise.

With rumors that Lucasfilm will be permitting new developers to explore the franchise, starting with Ubisoft, fans may not lose all expectations. A new leaked port of Star Wars: Republic Commando could also be required to reignite the series’s fire. Nintendo Everything has revealed that a port of the FPS leaked on Nintendo servers, likely implying the game is preparing for an official release on the console soon. The port is allegedly assembled by Aspyr Media (who has re-released several other classic Star Wars titles).

Aspyr Media appears to be doing a lot of work to get new generations to play some of these classic Star Wars games that have contrarily been stuck on old consoles. It’s doubtful whether this potential port of Star Wars: Republic Commando will come to PlayStation and Xbox. Republic Commando is presently accessible on Xbox via backward compatibility, but this new version would add some subtle improvements and achievements/trophies.

Aspyr Media is also working through other Disney-owned IP. It recently leaked that cult-classic Stubbs the Zombie would make a reemergence in March. The developer behind the game shut down, and the liberties to its titles relapsed to the Mouse. With Aspyr hard at work on several ports, it’s not hard to comprehend that fans will get to see even more classics in addition to Star Wars: Republic Commando.
