The Rings of Power may have had a divided audience during its season 1 debut, but the LOTR fandom still awaits season 2 of the prequel. With the second season confirmed during the season 1 run, fans have been waiting patiently for the next instalment of the spinoff, but no new news has followed for a long time.

But of course, that doesn’t mean we know nothing about season 2 or can’t guess what chapters the story will pick up in the upcoming season. So, I will give you the lowdown on everything we know so far about The Rings of Power season 2!

Regarding the cast, first, let’s address returning stars from season 1. Morfydd Clark (Galadriel), Charlie Vickers (Sauron), Robert Aramayo (Elrond), Nazanin Boyandi (Bronwyn), Tyrone Muhafidin (Theo), Daniel Weyman (The Stranger), Markella Kavenagh (Nori), Owain Arthur (Durin IV), Charles Edwards (Celebrimbor), and more will return in the next season.

New additions to the cast include Will Keen (His Dark Materials), Oliver Alvin-Wilson (Lovesick), William Chubb (The Sandman), Kevin Eldon (Shadow and Bone), Calam Lynch (Bridgerton), Stuart Bowman (The Pact), and Gavi Singh Chera (Vera)

Ciarán Hinds (Game of Thrones), Rory Kinnear (Bank of Dave), and Tanya Moodie (Motherland) also joined the cast this month.

The roles of these new additions have not been disclosed, but the showrunners have confirmed season 2 will be introducing new characters as well. One of them who is guaranteed to appear: Cirdan, the Shipwright. You know, the oldest Elf who went on to possess one of the titular rings. 

Season 2 production began in October 2022. Though Amazon Studios has yet to confirm an official release date, it will probably land on Prime Video in 2024. No plot details for the upcoming season have gone public, so for now, we only have season 1’s events to form theories on what could come next.

After the creation of Mordor, the defeat of Numenor, and the reveal of Sauron’s identity and the extent of The Stranger’s powers, season 2 has a lot of threads to follow. Which one are you most excited about?

Set 3,000 years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the show will be set in the Second Age of Middle-earth. Beginning with a time of peace, the series will follow the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron and the forging of the rings of power.
