Jess Bush Talks About Spock’s Love Triangle in Strange New Worlds

Jess Bush, who plays Nurse Chapel in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, has recently opened up about the love triangle between her character, Spock, and T’Pring in the series.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a spinoff series of Star Trek: Discovery. The first season premiered in May 2022 on Paramount+. Currently, the cast is shooting for the upcoming second season of the series, which is due for release in 2023.

The Star Trek spinoff focuses on the USS Enterprise crew exploring the far reaches of the galaxy in episodic stories. It reminds fans of the format of the classic Star Trek shows. Season 1 features Spock’s engagement to fellow Vulcan T’Pring, despite having obvious feelings for Nurse Chapel.

In The Original Series, set 10 years after Strange New Worlds, Nurse Chapel admits to having feelings for Spock, though she never acts on them.

To celebrate Star Trek Day, Jess Bush discussed the future of her character and what to expect from Season 2 in an interview with Screen Rant. When asked about the love triangle, Bush said that she is happy to know that fans love her pairing with Spock and can relate to their chemistry.

Check out her statement below:

I know! I know! I think it’s so funny. I love it. In my time at conventions, people just really want it to be real. They’re like, “So what’s going on, really? There has to be something going on with you guys.” I think it’s really lovely that people connect with the chemistry of our characters. It’s great to know that we’re giving something authentic and helping people have an experience through that.

Interestingly, there’s one episode in The Original Series where T’Pring leaves Spock for another Vulcan. This could mean there’s still a chance of something happening between Chapel and Spock, but a lot can happen in a span of two decades between the shows.

Strange New Worlds has moved away from the traditional Star Trek canon in some interesting ways. It will be exciting to see how the relationships among the three characters progress, although we already know the outcome.

Strange New Worlds manages to let episodes affect each other and yet deals with standalone themes, with Spock and Chapel’s growing relationship being an important example. Moreover, what makes it exciting to watch them are the compelling performances of both Peck and Bush.

Fans will have to wait and watch where the love triangle heads to, but if Peck and Bush continue to deliver such strong performances, this aspect of Spock and Chapel’s relationship will surely become an iconic part of the Star Trek canon.
