First Eight Mins of Stranger Things 4 Shed Light on Brenner’s Relation with El

Stranger Things 4 is coming back bigger, better, and stronger. Netflix released the first eight minutes of the fourth installment, and they’re chilling, to say the very least.

Before we see the Hawkins gang struggle to return to normal, Stranger Things 4 takes us back to the start—September 1979.

The series has painted Dr. Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine) as the evil, deceiving, and controlling doctor who is on the search for Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). The eight minutes Netflix released give us a shocking twist on his backstory.

Dr. Brenner is a man of patience, virtue, and, of course, intelligence. He has a fixed morning schedule where he solves newspaper word quizzes in 10 minutes, brews tea, and gets ready for work.

Contrary to what we’ve seen in the earlier installments, Dr. Brenner deeply cares for the kids at the Hawkins National Laboratories. He spends time with other special kids and takes Ten to the examination room holding his hands.

He is gentle with Ten, laughs with him, asks him to stop if things get harder, and encourages him.

The rosy pictures turn when Ten, while using his powers, gets terrified of seeing blood in another room and shakingly reveals that the room’s inhabitants are dead.

What follows is a massacre. Every corner of the Hawkins National Laboratories is splattered with blood.

In the end, a bloody and angry Eleven stands in front of a broken window with bodies lying around. Dr. Brenner’s “What have you done?” makes it clear that he believes El was behind the massacre.

The internet is rife with theories that El was trying to save them from whatever creature made it to the real world as she was the only one powerful enough to do so.

A backstory of Dr. Brenner and El’s chaotic relationship surely changes the game. It’s now confirmed that the Upside Down made their way into the real world years before the host possessed Will.

Season 4 will be split into two parts. Deadline reported that Volume 1 would be released on May 27, while the final two episodes—constituting Volume 2—will be released on July 1.
