Stranger Things S4: The Kids Return to Face Vecna in the Upside Down!

Stranger Things S4 will be on our screens this summer, starting May 27, and boy, was I blown away by the latest trailer! That production value is no joke and it sure got fans all riled up, especially since it has been a long three-year wait.

If you look closely, the trailer does give you a lot of hints about what to expect this coming season. But one major thing that jumps at you is the fact that the Hawkins gang will be returning to the Upside Down.

The perils of the Upside Down begin to haunt Hawkins once again after the events of Stranger Things S3. The gang is predicted to enter it to take down the new villain Vecna in S4.

The trailer fittingly plays a rock version of Journey’s “Separate Ways” as it looks like the characters are on different missions of their own.

A powerless Eleven is being asked to return to help save Hawkins, while the Hawkins gang is investigating creepy instances of their own. Back in freezing Russia, lord only knows what torture Hopper is going through.

We also see a few new characters, like that rad guy playing the guitar in the Upside Down—daring, I must say. Who they are and what role they’ll play remains unknown for now. But I did some digging on our villain and found some things worth knowing.

What is Vecna?

If you’re wondering who that hideous humanoid monster was at the end of the trailer, it’s most likely the season’s villain, Vecna. As per Dungeons and Dragons lore, he was a wizard who used dark magic to transform himself into an immortal creature known as a lich.

Now, one of the subplots this season is surrounding the mysterious deaths in Hawkins’ Creel House, where the father went berserk murdering his family. Could the Creel storyline somehow tie in with Vecna’s origin story? It is a good possibility.

Another theory is that Vecna is the Mind Flayer’s latest creation. But I don’t find that very probable. In the trailer, Vecna seems to have a mind of its own and is unlike the spider parasite that the Mind Flayer created in S3.

Coming to the last theory, one that is formulated by fans: It could be possible that Vecna is an entity created from those who died in the Upside Down. Popular choices are Billy, 001, or even Barb!

Does Max have powers?

Yes, you weren’t imagining things—Max indeed was levitating! That’s not all, she’s beginning to “see” things that aren’t there as well. Has she developed new powers?

In all likelihood, this is going to be the case of good ole possession, just like how Will was possessed in S2 and Billy was in S3. This time, it could be Vecna trying to break through the barrier and using Max’s grief for Billy as leverage to get into her head.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as Max could very well use her powers to fight off the Upside Down’s creatures.

Is Eleven’s shaved-head look back?

This season is going to explore who Eleven is without her powers and if they define her. It’s been emphasized that she’s one of the few people who can save everyone from the Upside Down, but how is that going to work if she has no powers?

Eleven’s shaved head Look

There’s a short montage of little Eleven with S1’s shaved look, and then a similar, but older-looking Eleven just a couple of seconds later. Are both scenes flashbacks, or is the second one actually Eleven from S4?

If it is the latter, it means that Eleven has agreed to go through all those torturous experiments once again, just to get her powers back and save her friends. Oh yes, it also means the shaved look is back in vogue.
