Sub-Zero Revealed as the Main Villain of the new ‘Mortal Kombat’

Mortal Kombat fans rejoice! The series, which is getting a reboot, will be released by HBO Max on April 16, 2021. Along with some new faces joining the lineup, some old ones will be back with a bang as well. One of them being Sub-Zero, who will play the main antagonist.

Adapted from its famous video game counterpart, the series is known for its fierce characters who possess impressive abilities. Laced with epic fight sequences, the franchise has been a fan favorite since the ’90s.

Among the most popular characters from the series is Sub-Zero, who serves as a key figure besides Scorpion, for the games. Known for his cryomancy skills, he is one of the brothers of the Lin Kuei clan. Both brothers possessed similar abilities and were called Bi-Han and Kuai Liang.

Bi-Han, who was the first Sub-Zero, was killed by Scorpion in the original game. Swearing to take revenge for his brother Kuai Ling, he became Sub-Zero in Mortal Kombat 2. He portrays Sub-Zero in most of the games.

Bi-Han’s Sub-Zero, who is essentially more vicious than his brother, seems to be the movie version’s inspiration. In the trailer, Sub-Zero delivers deadly moves in a fight with the Scorpion, which is reminiscent of Bi-Han’s ruthlessness.

Director Simon McQuoid seems to have confirmed this, too. In an interview with IGN, not only did he reveal that Sub-Zero has been cast as the primary villain, but he also talked about the character’s devilish capabilities, as seen in the trailer. Sub-Zero terribly demolishes Jax’s arms in the opening scene, hinting at what’s more to come with relation to his powers.

Although Bi-Han’s Sub-Zero was depicted as a villain, his motives were based on vengeance for his clan. While it seems that the Sub-Zero from the trailer is not Bi-Han, it’ll still be interesting to see what more’s in store as we inch closer to the movie’s release.
