Star Wars, as a tale of good vs. evil, had seemingly ended with The Rise of Skywalker. However, the universe continued to be expanded upon with untold stories of the saga and prequels on Disney+. The Mandalorian and the latest Obi-Wan Kenobi are two great examples of that.
The Rise of Skywalker was released way back in 2019, which seems like an eternity ago, and we haven’t seen any movie from the franchise yet. In fact, the way things ended between the lead character Rey and the anti-hero Kylo Ren was quite tragic.
So, will there be any more Star Wars movies, and if so, will the popular characters Rey Skywalker and Kylon Ren return?
Disney+ has confirmed a new Star Wars trilogy directed by Taika Waititi. Since nothing has been confirmed about the story, it is uncertain if we’ll see Rey Skywalker and Kylo Ren again.
In February, we were blessed with an announcement about Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, a two-night adventure experience that involved Rey Skywalker and Kylo Ren. It was around their bond, and the events took place after The Last Jedi.
However, fans did want more in the form of live-action content. After all, it had been so long since The Rise of Skywalker (2019) came out. So, fret not because Disney+ has announced not one, not two, but three upcoming Star Wars films.
These three would release every alternate year starting in 2023, and to make it even better, they will be helmed by Taika Waititi. The man is known for his genius writing and depiction of characters in films like What We Do in the Shadows and Thor: Ragnarok.
However, there’s no other information on this trilogy besides the one given above. The story hasn’t been locked yet and considering that it is Waititi, he might want to create something refreshing, something the fans of this universe haven’t seen or experienced before.
In fact, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy even said in an interview that the trilogy would go beyond the sequel trilogy. Instead, they want to go far into the future after Rise of Skywalker and explore worlds beyond what already exists.
This could be a subtle hint that Rey Skywalker and Kylo Ren might not return to the series. The latter has already passed, but the former is still alive. Even if Rey comes in the film, it will most likely be in the form of a mentor, or she would be a character that would pass on the mantle to someone else.
All of this is merely speculation for now. We just have to wait for the creators or the studio to spill more beans in the future as and when the projects progress.
Besides the trilogy, Patty Jenkins is coming with Rogue Squadron, which had been delayed for a while. So, there’s a lot in the pipeline for the franchise, and hopefully, it does give us something fresh and new.
