Tale of the Nine-Tailed picks up Lee Yeon’s story four months after his return, his marriage to Nam Ji-Ah, and his brother’s sacrifice. The mythical fox asks Taluipa, the River of Dead’s guardian, to bring back Lee Rang, and she agrees to grant his wish under one condition – he must return to his job as a supernatural hunter.

Yeon agrees with a sub-condition that his immortality be limited until Ji-Ah dies and the contract is sealed. Soon after, a masked man steals the boundary stone from the river of the dead, and evil spirits start spilling into the real world. Barely holding them off, Taluipa sends Yeon to hunt the thief and retrieve the stone. To escape his capture, the thief jumps into the past, and Yeon follows with a timer on his mission.

Lee Yeon lands right in the center of Korea’s rebellion against Japan in 1938, and in the scuffle, the stone is lost to a thug, who the hunter follows after a slight delay. Turns out the ruffian works for Lee Rang of the past, who is in his bandit phase, and while Lee Yeon is happy to see his brother, he must gain his trust.

He manages that, but right as he intends to demand the stone, the masked man appears and steals it back, fatally wounding the hunter’s brother. Yeon hastily decides to save his brother and ditches the stone, and his brother demands they go to Myoyeongak, the second-best place to eat in town.

Their trip to Myoyeongak ends with Yeon finding Long Living Dong Bang Sak, a demon who claims he can increase lifespans.

He tasks Lee Yeon to bring the sword of Utari, the only weapon that can kill him, and Lee Yeon departs. The hunter was suspicious of the demon and thus warned the restaurant owner, Ryu Hong Joo, and tasked her and the other employees to keep Lee Rang safe.

Lee Yeon visits his past self – an opium addict grieving the loss of his one true love. Why? Because he possessed the Utari in the 1930s.

Lee Yeon called it! Bang Sak is a devious being who tricks people by claiming he will increase their life thread but only steals their souls. The restaurant workers hide Lee Rang’s body, but Bang Sak eventually finds it. Lee Yeon arrives with the Utari and fights him, and Lee Rang comes to the rescue after his hanging soul possesses the body of the demon’s previous victim.

Lee Rang exposes the demon’s secret, and the brothers exploit it and eventually sever his head with the sword, restoring Lee Rang and the girl whose body he borrowed. The detour saved Lee Rang, but now Lee Yeon’s time is up, and he’s stuck in 1938, where the thief is still running around with the guardian’s stone.

How will the hunter return to the future to those who he holds precious? How will he find the masked thief and retrieve the stone? Will Lee Rang help his brother, and will Lee Yeon come face to face with his past self again?

The next episode of the second season of Tale of the Nine-Tailed will release on tvN on May 13, 2023, at 5 P.M. So, keep an eye out and stay tuned to the Korean supernatural drama and Cine Dope for the latest update on Lee Yeon’s story!
