Ted Lasso Season 2 Debut Gives Apple TV+ Its Biggest Premiere Weekend

Apple is basking in the success of its innovative new original comedy series, Ted Lasso. Season 2 of the series debuted on July 23, and the premiere episode has brought in the biggest audience of any original film or TV show on Apple TV+.

The series gave the streaming platform its biggest premiere day ever. The company claimed that the soccer comedy series made its No. 1 debut across all series and movies over its opening weekend (July 23-25).

This is a pretty big deal. However, the number of people who tuned in is unclear as Apple did not disclose an exact figure. Although, the company said the show ‘increased its viewership by 6x over season one.’

Like most streaming services, Apple has been reluctant to release figures such as subscriber count and views for competitive reasons. However, Netflix usually discloses the number of households that chose to stream a particular title (including stream counts for at least two minutes).

According to data analyzed by Variety Intelligence Platform, Ted Lasso’s S1 premiere episode, the previously most-watched premiere on Apple TV+, ranked 89th overall among other titles across streaming platforms from November 1, 2019-July 18, 2021.

Ratings highlights provided by Apple read:

During the Ted Lasso Season 2 premiere weekend July 23-25, Apple TV+ grew its new viewers by a record-breaking 50% week-over-week. There was a halo effect, with Ted Lasso helping boost viewership for Apple TV+’s comedies Schmigadoon, Physical and Mythic Quest as well during the three-day period.

This is impressive but, again, hard to compare since we don’t know the actual figure.

The series revolves around Ted Lasso, played by Jason Sudeikis, an American football coach hired to manage a British soccer team, despite having no experience in the field.
