Ted Lasso Season 4: Is It Happening or Not? Rumors, Spin-offs & More

The season 3 finale of Ted Lasso aired yesterday and we’re clearly not over it yet. There’s been conflicting statements and reports about whether or not there will be another season, and that’s what we’re going to talk about in this article.

Ted Lasso season 4 is not confirmed yet, but it is not ruled out either. The cast and crew of the series have mentioned that although they intended to have 3 seasons only, the show might return for another season if viable.

1. Why Season 4 is Not a Possibility Yet

If you ask me, as an avid follower of the series, I don’t think the show will return for another season. There are many reasons for this.

Even if Ted Lasso returns for another season, it will be difficult to have Jason Sudeikis be such an integral part of the series. At the end of season 3, Ted leaves AFC Richmond to return to Kansas to his son, Henry. That sort of gave closure to his saga with Richmond.

The next season therefore cannot focus on Ted’s relationship with Richmond. Changing the setting of the show from the English Premier League to Ted’s life away from football might also not sit well with viewers.

The show’s co-creator and star Jason Sudeikis has already said that the third season is where they originally intended to end the series. The finale demonstrated that as well, considering how it ends.

But he also hinted that if there’s demand and enthusiasm, there’s a chance that we could get more. We all know for sure that there’s no lack of demand or interest. But it will be difficult to bring back the same comfort in the series with Ted’s departure.

2. How Ted Lasso Season 4 Could Still Happen

Apart from the fact that Ted Lasso has a loyal fanbase and immense critical acclaim (especially for the first two seasons), we can’t deny the positive hints we’ve got from the cast and crew of the series about season 4. I’ve already mentioned what Sudeikis said about the matter, but here’s some more.

Brett Goldstein a.k.a Roy Kent, who is also an executive producer and writer, previously went on record to suggest that they were writing season 3 as the final season but he also talked about some of the ideas that the show could explore in season 4.

Bill Lawrence, one of the executive producers of Ted Lasso, mentioned that whether the show will continue or not depends on Sudeikis and the producers. That’s a hint right there that season 4 is not completely out of cards.

Moreover, there are plenty of ideas that Ted Lasso season 4 could explore. But the writers have to figure out a way to bring Ted Lasso back, because the series will not be the same without him.

3. Potential Spin-offs of Ted Lasso

There are also some clues that suggest the possibility of spinoffs featuring some of the characters, such as Keeley and Rebecca’s involvement in a women’s team at A.F.C Richmond. We could also have a spin-off showing Roy Kent’s rise as a footballer.

As a football fan, I would say there are a lot of things that the show can cover, including the politics involved in UEFA Champions League or the UEFA Europa League, football culture in other leagues apart from the Premier League, the Financial Fair Play rules, or even FIFA and its politics in the World Cup.

The show simply touched upon the topic of the Super League, which is a raging debate in the football world. Therefore, subsequent seasons can definitely explore the same.

There’s enough content in real-life football which they can take inspiration from. The first 3 seasons itself gave us several references from the world of football. Ted Lasso is eerily similar to the current manager of Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp. Nathan Shelly is clearly inspired by real-life manager Jose Mourinho. Zava’s character is a tribute to Zlatan Ibrahimovich, while Jamie Tartt in season 1 is arguably a reference to football legend Cristiano Ronaldo.

All of this, of course, is my personal speculation. But it is true that much of Ted Lasso is inspired by real-life incidents and people from the world of European football, which is what I personally cherish about the series a lot.

So, if at all Ted Lasso returns for another season in the future, I would love to see more references to real-life football and other contemporary issues in the sport being explored in the series.

Lastly, Ted Lasso mentions Ronaldo in the very first episode of the show. But throughout the series, there’s no mention of the greatest football player of all time, Lionel Messi. This is not criticism, but just an innocent request from a football fan in love with the series! Could we not get a tiny reference?

4. About Ted Lasso

Ted Lasso is an American sports-comedy streaming TV series developed by Bill Lawrence, Jason Sudeikis, Joe Kelly, and Brendan Hunt. It’s based on a character of the same name that Sudeikis first portrayed in a series of promos for NBC Sports’ coverage of the Premier League.

It follows the life of Ted Lasso, a coach of college-level American football who is unexpectedly recruited to coach an English Premier League team, AFC Richmond, despite having no experience at all in association football.

It stars Sudeikis as the titular character, Ted Lasso, joined by Hannah Waddingham, Jeremy Swift, Phil Dunster, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Nick Mohammed, Juno Temple, and Sarah Niles among many others.
