Teen Wolf Writer Tells the Reason Behind Making a Movie Instead of Season 7

Taking its title from Michael J. Fox’s 1985 movie of the same name, MTV’s Teen Wolf series first premiered in 2011, introducing audiences to the titular character Scott McCall (played by Tyler Posey).

Since its premiere, the show has garnered both critical and audience approvals and spawned up to six seasons.

Teen Wolf ending in 2017 after six successful seasons and 100 episodes was certainly disappointing for many fans. Now, Paramount+ is looking to capitalize on its popularity by reviving the property in a couple of ways.

In September 2021, 4 years after it ended its run on MTV, it was announced that Teen Wolf: The Movie would be released on Netflix in 2022.

Several fan-favorite characters, including Scott, will be joining the fight once a new threat surfaces. Considering that this is basically a continuation of Scott’s story, it begs the question of why Teen Wolf is getting a movie rather than a proper Season 7.

During San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Teen Wolf: The Movie held a panel. Davis explained why Teen Wolf had to return with a movie during the event. He told Paramount+ that he could not do another season of the show.

His idea was to make a film instead, motivating him to write down 138 pages of information, even though he joked that was not enough for the seventh season. Hence, Teen Wolf: The Movie was born.

It’s still a bit unclear why Teen Wolf ended before Season 7 of the show. Season 6 was not announced as the last when it was renewed. Instead, Teen Wolf was abruptly canceled with both Davis and MTV claiming that the show was finished. Its declining ratings could possibly be the final cause of its cancelation.

Additionally, MTV pushed for more unscripted content. In the wake of Teen Wolf’s return, Paramount+ seems to have realized that there are still stories left to tell. Sarah Michelle Gellar will star in Wolf Pack, the streaming service’s new spinoff, apart from the upcoming film.

If its flailing ratings were the real reason for MTV dumping Teen Wolf, it was wise to start by releasing a single movie first.

By doing so, both Paramount+ and Davis, as well as the cast, will know how successful this return may be. It is possible that they can eventually pivot to making full seasons, or possibly even spinoffs, if the movie turns out to be a hit.

As of now, all of those depend on how the public reacts to the Teen Wolf movie.
