That’s a Trap! House of the Dragon Showrunner Teases Brutal Twist in S2

House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones spinoff featuring the civil war in the House of Targaryen, is based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood. The “history” book also has a bloody and revolting chapter which the prequel’s writers and producers have confirmed will be portrayed in season 2.

I think you already know which one I’m talking about. The Blood and Cheese storyline is a must after Daemon and Rhaenyra decide to avenge Lucerys.

In an episode of the podcast The Stuff That Dreams Are Made of, Ryan Condal teased that the writers’ room is currently working on that specific storyline by referring to their latest “R&D” project. He explained he’s been “investigating a lot of rat traps recently,” alluding to a key detail in the storyline. Read his full comment below:

Rhaenyra’s Revenge

We’ve been doing a lot of R&D; I’ve been investigating a lot of rat traps recently, so I will say that. And they’re very cool. That goes more to book readers more than anything else, but stay tuned.

There’s like a whole mood board of rat catchers through the ages. There’s one particular one with a guy with them all on a stick and like a string of rats. It’s brilliant. But there’s one guy on YouTube who, I kid you not, has like a million and a half followers, and he just shows you how to make rat traps from around the world and historical rat traps.

House of The Dragon has taken to reiterating these stories with a few details changed, but this is a direct reference to the aforementioned storyline. Condal even mentions that the “book readers” will quickly understand the connection between the extensive research of rat traps and season 2 development.

In Fire & Blood, Daemon hirs two assassins, Blood and Cheese, to avenge his and Rhaenyra’s child, Lucerys. The two assassins later creep into the castle, making Helaena choose among her three children. Selecting the youngest to be sacrificed, Helaena is plunged into despair when they kill her eldest, Jahaerys.

The rat traps connection? Cheese works as a ratcatcher in the Red Keep of the King’s Landing and this explains the showrunner’s tease.
