Attempting to Make Sense of the Clones’ Designation Numbers

If you want to lose your mind quickly, try looking for logic in the numbering of clones in the Star Wars universe. The fact is the numbering doesn’t make any sense.

Over the years, various people have named the clone troopers according to their whims without following a single chain of thought.

Clone troopers generally receive the designation CC or CRC (Clone Regimental Commander). Clone trooper captains and lieutenants receive the designation CC or CL, respectively. Another class of troopers, i.e., the Alpha-class Advanced Recon Commandos, are identified with the A or Alpha designation.

The letters are generally followed by a four-digit number separated by a hyphen. So, a clone trooper like Crosshair will have a designation number CT-9904.

But, there are many exceptions to this rule. Commanders like Hevy (CT-782), Fives before he got his ARC designation (CT-27-5555) seem to follow a different convention altogether. This is what makes this insanely complicated.

Before discussing the members’ identification numbers, let’s focus on the history of the Bad batch for a moment.

The Bad batch, formerly known as Clone Force 99, was a special forces squad of clone commandos in its prime during the clone wars.

The squad initially consisted of four members who were modified with genetic mutations and led by Clone Sergeant Hunter. Other members included Crosshair, Wrecker, and Tech. After the Battle of Anaxes, Advanced Recon Commando Clone Corporal Echo also joined the team.

During the embryo stage, the Kaminoans modified the members’ brains to create specific mutations that resulted in them developing superpowers. For instance, Hunter had enhanced sensory perception, Crosshair was the best sharpshooter in the entire regime, Wrecker had enhanced muscular strength, and Tech had heightened intelligence.

Talking about squad numbers, the CT numbers of only two members have been revealed so far.

They are CT-9904 (Crosshair) and CT-1409 (Advanced Recon Commando Clone Corporal Echo).

The number 9904 at the end of Crosshair’s designation could mean that he was the fourth clone to be mutated in the 99th Clone Trooper.

We are still waiting for the designation numbers of the other members to be revealed. It will also give us an idea about who was mutated first. After all, several details about their origins are still left to be uncovered.
