The Batman Director Says It Will Be The Most Emotional Batman Movie

The Dark Knight will rise again, and he’s going to be different than before. We will see Bruce Wayne evolve to fit into the shoes of The Batman.

On Tuesday, a new clip for Matt Reeves’ The Batman debuted at CinemaCon. It is unsure when the featurette will be released to the public. However, as reported by EW, in it Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne walks through a rainy Gotham in chaos. Andy Serkis’ Alfred is also seen, Batman beating up enemies, ‘explosions, police officers, and more chaos.’

In the footage, Reeves revealed the film was partially inspired by Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One and said that it was going to be the ‘most emotional’ take on Batman,

I felt that we’ve seen lots of origin stories. It seems things go further and further into fantasy, and I thought, well, one place we haven’t been is grounding it in the way that Year One does, to come right in to a young Batman, not being an origin tale, but referring to his origins and shaking him to his core. You can have it be very practical, but I also thought it could be the most emotional Batman movie ever made.

In the clip, Pattinson said that the film was special to him,

For some reason, Batman has always stood out as one of the major characters of the 20th century, and so many people connect with it on such a deep level for so many different reasons. From the first conversation I had with Matt about it, I just knew that there was something radically different [here].

Robert Pattinson

During last year’s DC Comics’ FanDome event, Warner Bros. Pictures released the first trailer for The Batman. The clip gave us the first look at a much grittier and serious Bruce Wayne.

Reeves explained how this Caped Crusader is different from what fans have seen before and that ‘he’s very far from being perfect,’

One of the things that are interesting is learning how to be Batman. He’s trying to figure out what he can do to change this place… It’s a detective story, a mystery, it’s got, of course, action, and it’s incredibly personal for him. He’s kind of a growing legend, and [criminals] are afraid of him.

Reeves added that Pattinson’s Bruce is trying to figure out and establish his image and the way everyone perceives him,

He’s not a symbol of hope yet. One of the things he has to deal with is how he’s perceived… What was exciting for me was not doing the origin [story] but to meet him in the middle and to see him make mistakes and grow and fail and be heroic in a way that felt very human and very flawed.

In a weird way, it is the origin of a lot of Rogue’s Gallery. Selina isn’t Catwoman yet. Oswald isn’t the Penguin yet — in fact, he doesn’t like being called the Penguin.

The Batman - DC FanDome Teaser

It has been a year since the first teaser dropped. The full-length trailer is expected to debut at the DC FanDome on October 16, 2021.

There have been speculations that DC will also drop trailers for upcoming DCEU films like The Flash, Black Adam, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods and the Peacemaker series.

The Batman will supposedly be the first in a trilogy. The film also stars Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/Riddler, and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin.

After several COVID-related delays, The Batman is set to hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
