The Batman Trailer Is Everything One Could’ve Asked For… And More

Matt Reeves’ The Batman just got its main trailer at 2021 DC FanDome a few hours ago, and it revealed some solid new shots of the Caped Crusader, the Penguin, Catwoman, Alfred, and the Riddler.

The trailer is spectacular and Michael Giacchino’s theme blending perfectly with Nirvana’s ‘Something In The Way’ is like a cherry on the top.

It begins with The Riddler sitting at a diner, seemingly prepared and anticipating what’s coming as a team of cops flood in to arrest him, and he complies without resisting at all.

The Bat-Signal then lights up, and we hear, “When that light hits the sky, it’s not just a call. It’s a warning.” Batman goes to what I’m assuming is Arkham Asylum to meet its newest inmate as the Riddler says, “I’ve been trying to reach you.”

You see, it’s always a bad sign if the villain gets caught early on, they 100% have a grand scheme already in motion, and by the looks of things, it seems like the Riddler wants to turn the whole city against Batman.

Paul Dano as the Riddler

This is, without a doubt, Paul Dano. However, neither the new trailer nor the character poster has shown what the actor’s face will look like without the mask.

Batman and Seline Kyle share quite a few moments in the trailer. Bruce clearly has a death wish as he says, “I don’t care what happens to me,” and Seline tells him, “It’s only gonna get worse for you.”

He has a scarred back, establishing that he has been doing this for a while as a new riddle is narrated, “What’s black and blue… and dead all over?… You.”

The clip ends with a car chase involving the Penguin as he thinks he’s gotten rid of Batman, only to see the Batmobile speeding in from the flames and crashing into his car. Batman then walks towards the camera from the Penguin’s inverted point of view as ‘THE BATMAN’ logo closes in.

As always, Christian Bale’s Batman is like the standard that all other actors who portray the superhero have to measure up to.

Some might even have started comparing Robert Pattinson’s Bruce to Bale’s version (which many fans would agree hasn’t been topped by anyone yet). However, my favorite part of the clip is a short but a crucial one that has me wondering that maybe Pattinson’s version might come out on top.

After Batman’s whole “I’m Vengeance” bit, there’s a shot of Catwoman’s face stunned with a look of horror as she’s watching him punch the hell out of some guy in clown makeup (you know whose follower that is supposed to be).

That shot proves this Batman is going to be the most brutal and ruthless one, for even Catwoman is terrified of him.

Pattinson’s version is the ‘primitive’ Batman when he first starts punishing criminals. Around this time in the comics, he was carrying a gun to eliminate the bad guys, so his being ethical and having a rule about not killing people came in much later.

The film also seems to be leaning more towards the detective side of Bruce Wayne, and who else but the Riddler could be the Moriarty to Wayne’s Sherlock?

It would be interesting to see how this Batman goes from an anger-fuelled vengeance-seeking protagonist to an actual hero who cares more about protecting the victims rather than passing judgment onto the criminals.

Ahead of the DC FanDome event, the film’s official Twitter account posted two character posters for The Batman and The Riddler.
